England out...what can I say .

Overall I think its been a good world cup so far. The hosts have done a brilliant job with the organisation. Great stuff.

As far as England goes or is it gone (?)...
There were some good or even great performances by individual players, but England just did not play as a team. Tactically it was bad. Easy to see in hindsight, but going with only 4 recognised strikers, two of which not truly match fit was a mistake. Playing with one up front was not clever. We just didn't play to our full potential.
Owen Hargreaves did a fantastic job wherever he was asked to play in my view. Carrick shone also in the one match he had.

I think David Beckham has been a fantastic captain off the field. A great ambassador, but on field it just didn't happen. He has not had a truly great game since being made captain.

France had a very quiet start but have improved with each game and must now have a good chance of the title, but I fancy Germany. They are playing as a team in every respect.

Normally at world cups a few new or underestimated players burst on to the scene to become the next stars, but this time it has not happened.

Cheers and good luck to the 4 teams that are still in it.

Peter

:-)

I agree with most of what your saying, but with reference to Beckham i believe that the 5 man mid and 1 up front was a big mistake, it didn't allow beckham the room on the flanks to move and deliver crosses into the box, 1 man up front was just stupid 1because Rooney wasn't completely fit and 2 every time he got near a ball he would have at least 2 men marking him, as he was alone. They would have been a lot more effective with a 3-5-2, that's if he had to have the 5 man mid!

My congartes to Italia !!!!

It was a good, hard and in my opinion, a fair play. Our team fought a good fight, but the italian team was better !!!

There is no cause to be sad for us - the Germans gave all they had - and so we only have to be proud about this guys.

I´m looking forward to see the next games and I hope we will see the same fairplay, too.

Cheers,
Markus

The only problem was Italy gave all they had as well as a new house for the ref ( the ref in the Australia v's Italy match)!

i can accept that german lost the game although i'm still saddnen with it. The only thing that surpise me was ballack's acting when he elbowed an italian and 'pretended' to be injured so that the referee wont punish him. Yeah...it works...shame on ballack as my fav player....
although i still surprise to see the second goal.........

now my vote goes to France....see if they can play like the 98 final....

go go france...........

Congratulations Italy.
Bad luck Germany.

If it had gone to penalties....who knows.
The German lads played their hearts out and the Italians showed some real class.

A great game. Both teams played well.
Also I must congratulate the ref....unusual I know.....he did a great job in helping the game flow. Excellent.

Seeing my prediction of a German win was so wrong, I'm not going to say another word about tonights game. France or Portugal?....we'll see later :-)

Cheers
Peter

hey Engin, I understand your point. I would be great for Portugese and for Figo to go in final. 3 times they met France and 3 times they loose since 1984. Never 3 without 4.....
I advise you to buy a present or some sleeping tablet since...
And believe me or not, I will see the match tonight in a Portugese bar !!!
I've take my gum shield and my bullet proof vest..

Portugal vs France:

What a boring game....I nearly fell in sleep....

But the good side of this game: No Kung-Fu, Wrestling or something like that...just some nice attempts of diving...

I hope the final will have some more power...

Here is a picture a italian friend sent me yesterday...

Cheers,
Markus

Allo,

What I told you, we won !!!!!!! VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVIIIIIIIIIIVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEE la France !!! we got the best players in the world !!!! ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZiiiiiiiidane ! ! yeeeeepppppppppppaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa, alleluïaaaaaa, and etc.........

Now calm down and some comments.
Engin : thanks for the encouragement. We will try to do the same with this bloody italians (they are good those bastards !).
Markus : I understand your disapointment. I would really love to see a final Germany vs France. But believe me, when your team play, you're not bored at all. The more you will go closer to the final, the less goals you will have (except for this magic moment against Brasil in 1998 ...3-0 !. BTW Brazil will really fear us when they will met us since we often beat them in world cup, and we are nearly the only ones...). More generally, this world cup didn't see so much goals. My theory is : it's like in the real world : nobody has balls nowadays ! Politicians, CEO etc.. Everybody are so scared to lose (money, time, matchs, jobs..) that nobody moves..It's announciating changing times my friends. Look the French revolution, Mai 1968, etc..Ok I come back on earth..

Some remarks on the match : penalty was justified, and Zizou make an excellent job in front of Ricardo which is, I must say, a really really good goal (see what he have done against England). Henry was not at his top shape, since he missed two occasions where Zizou gave him a "caviar" pass.. I wondering why Trezeguet is punished on the bank..he must have done bad thingss...Zizou did a good match, just less impressive than against Brazil. But hey, we've got a final to play..I was afraid the Portugeses push us to make faults as we had many yellow card for Zidane, Makele etc..But apart Saha who will not play the final, we will have all our beloved players for Sunday !

Markus, what gave the impression of a boring game is that we loose in the 2nd half time a great number of balls in the midlle..so not so many occasion to score for us and Portugal got a really strong defense.
Defense..defense.. French defense was amazing !!!!!!!! Thuram I love you !!! this guy is realllllllllllly smart and he has a big heart and courage. He did a tremendous match, he was on each action, he jump, ran, dive, without taking a card. What a man ! From the 75 mn, we loose the intiative and was everytime in defense. You canno't immage the stress I had. But our Angel the Flying Barthez was there. He only did a mistake by mix up volley ball and football...Portugese had 2 or 3 occasions to score, one really net with the Ronaldo head.

Ronaldo...Ronaldo... Sorry for the Portugese armorama's member, but this guy is a ###!! ...oo :-)8 Really ! I mean a real actress, with a head attracting the slaps (french expression, sorry for transaltion) he dive, dive dive again, scriming shouting calling his mum, but thank you mister referee you didn't gave him a penny !!! This type of action must be punished afterward when the referees look the match on the video.
Apart from that he is a really good and speedy player but seriously he will end shot down in the street either by a fan or a club player colleage... :-)
See you Sunday before the TV guys.

Italy vs France will be a classic

May the best team win

In all, allmost all the matches in the knock-out system have been close, so, say an Australia - England or Holland - Spain match may have been possible too. Fate dictated that such was not to be though.

So true !
For your information, Italy didn't win against France since 1974...

Hi Julien,

SWMBO stands for She Who Must Be Obeyed!
It's from (I think) 'Rumpole of the Bailey', a British legal-based TV series in which the never-seen Mrs Rumpole was referred to as She Who Must Be Obeyed.
It's not as cheesey as calling her 'my girlfriend' and less ambiguous than 'partner', lol.
Here's another shot of that penalty:

Sweeeet!

No problem MC, you gave me the origin of the expression, I will be less silly than yesterday with that.
Where does your SWMBO come from (which area of France) ?
Funny because my SWMBO intial is MC, for Marie-Catherine.
Best my friend,

And John Mortimer nicked it from H Rider Haggard's novel 'She'
