You all know I know very little about World Cup but I did see a replay of Beckams kick (Corner or penalty I don't remember) that corkscrewed through the air and into the goal. That was pretty cool to me.

Then don't say "Bend it like Beckham" for nothing, Alan!

How to justify paying somebody (not just Beckham mind, I'm not singeling him out..) £100.000 plus is beyond me.

At least footballers break a sweat. Look at Tiger Woods. Millions for going on a stroll in the park and taking a litttle white ball along.

June 04 to June 05 Woods was first with $87 million USD in earnings. Shumacher was second. Beckham was all the way down at 7th.

Remember, these guys are only getting paid what the market will bear. Someone is making money or they wouldn't be getting paid that much.

I had no idea what the heck that meant. I always thought what a dumb title for a movie :-)

Don't get me wrong, I'm not on a crusade against high earning footballers. Or Basketball players or baseball players etc etc. Like I mentioned to, the market forces can't realy be argued with.
What I'm trying to express is how I can't really fathom how the balance got so for out of tilt. Football is probably the only game where the balance between the fans and the players is so far out, espescially in relating to what they actually do. Compare rugby, which is a much harder game (physicaly and tacticaly) but where players are not paint such silly wages.

Golf players earning millions. Fair enough, golf is always been more of an upper-class game. And golf players only get paid if they win, not just for being in the team, even if on the bench or injured. If a golf or tennis player injures himself his earnings dive (much like a Portugees footballer..I'm not bitter.) And lets be fair, it does take a lot more skill to hit a 'little white ball' iin to a hole only just bigger than said ball, than it takes to put a large white ball in to a very big goal. I mean just compare the size of goal in football and hockey... How can you not score in football?? :-)

As for Schuie and all, would you potentially kill your self at 200 MPH for anything less? Mind you, if you want to watch exciting racing, try Touringcar racing...

Cheers
Henk

Hey! Have the bunnys moved to the north of Steak n Kid'?

At least these geezers are out there playing sport and entertaining the masses... Compared to some corporate fatcats, Beckham would have to 'hoove' for 5 seasons to make what they earn in a week... :-)

True story, and slightly off topic:

About 6 years ago an Indiana Pacer complained in the newspaper that not enough fans were coming to the basketball games. A guy wrote a letter to the editor and said, “Okay, for me to take my wife and two sons to a Pacer game, with average tickets, pay for parking, four hot dogs, 2 soft drinks and 2 beers would cost me about $300. That would be for about 3 hours of entertainment. So based on what I make a year compared to what the average Indiana Pacer player makes a year it would be like a basketball player taking three of his friends out for dinner and spending about $12,000.”

Classic…

God, that ESPN site is real garbage for football (soccer ). Problem is that football, globally, is a bigger money-spinner than anything else.

Also, why SHOULD players be criticised for what they earn? If some team from the boondies are earning less than Beckham/Ronaldinho etc who the hell cares? No one goes to watch them anyway, no-one wants them for advertising... The market decides. Personally I find Beckham a grossly over-rated clown, I'm not gonna lose any sleep as to what he does or doesn't earn...

Still waiting for some kind of explanation as to what skill is actually requitred for rugby -I HATE this 'sport'....

Jim,

Don't misunderstand me. I think they are making "market value" for their skills as well, whatever they may be. Does soccer have a salary cap like the NFL and NBA?

No way! Simple explanation really, as the structures are so different, the Franchise system doesn't operate here (and wouldn't) until there is an NBA-Style European football league, which the respective (national) federations would never accept. Oh happy day! To see Barcelona play Milan Chelsea or Bayern Munich rather than pratting about pretending that there is 'equality' in the leagues...

Well, one skill NOT needed for rugby is the oscar-level acting ability so that you can roll around and cry like a girl every time an opposition player jogs by within five metres of your ankle. I mean, if those 'athletes' spent at least as much time on their ball skills as on their 'bawl' skills we'd have a game that actually flowed (a bit like rugby). Right now it's beginning to resemble the NFL -- play two minutes, whistle blows, wait two minutes 'til ref decides whether it's worth it, then start over.

actually, a lot! i won't go into details but to mention this: diving in soccer is nothing compared to the Hopoate Manouvre!
although that really required some skill and accuracy...

Before you go any further! Golf player only get paid when they win- then how the fu**k did Greg Norman get so rich, he hasn't one a game in about 15 years and he one of the highest money earner's in the game!
Some rugby players are paid in millions as well. Rugby much harder game? They have harder heads that's about all!

Interestingly except for the worlds of Pro-Baseball and Golf, professional atheleticism is virtually unheard of in Japan. The Japanese team got $350 each for their entire world cup trip. Most factory workers indeed make more than that per week.

But! This is actually quite detrimental to sport, it means that atheletes need to have real jobs, leaving less time for training and obviously reducing skill and talent pool (more money attracts more people increasing the chance of finding gifted performers).
A good example is the Japanese Baseball team, highly paid, highly talented world champions vs. the Japanese (you guessed it) soccer team, poorly paid coming home first round (although getting there in the first place is an achievement........)

So:

(A)Big$$+(b)discipline+(c)talent=(D)good sport

D - A or b or c=(e)mediocre sport

e - A or b or c=North Sydney Rabbitohs
:-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

It's south sydney rabbito's and all the money in the world won't help them win!
Are you sure about the japanese team payments, Japan pro footballers are paid pretty well, maybe they spent the buget at the last world cup!

Ah good old Hopa! May his fingers forever smell funny..........

Rugby requires skills including the ability to throw and catch a ball while running (much harder than using one's feet) the ability to kick a ball between two posts of roughly soccer width from up to 50m away. The ability to work as a coordinated team in scrums etc.

The list goes on but right now SWMBO demands lunch!

It's a hell of a lot harder to controll a ball with your feet than with your hands, and you'll find most of the good goal kickers in Rugby played football when they were younger.

I've heard it's even harder to control your bladder when you have someone like Jonah Lomu powering towards you, intent on stomping you into the turf.

Hmmmm, Jonah the Whale vs. The Beckster.......... hehehe

Hmmm, I wonder, if Becks would wear his sarong, that might just throw Lomu of his stride...

Becks would be good for conversions though..

Hi,
As an American I am enjoying the World Cup. I do not care who wins, I just enjoy the matches. Gives me something to do until the EPL starts up in August.

Just to let you know, I do not watch Steroid Ball(MLB), Thug League(NBA) or Fake Football League- hehehehe!

Chris- Go Gunners!
