Journey with me back to 2003 to the Mystery Mountain Ranch in Southern Caifornia to the movie set that served as a partial re-make of the 1927 movie "Hell's Angels". The 10 day movie shoot was to be incorporated in the modern telling of the life of multi-millionaire Howard Hughes, "The Aviator".

The Nuremberg Toy Fair is probably the largest event of its type in the world. The show is held exclusively for professionals in the sector - manufacturers, distributors and retailers all attend to showcase their new products for the coming year. One of the (very active) 'sectors' is the area which concerns us - modelling...
The Quebec Figure Modelers' Association is holding its 14th annual figure show at the Stewart Museum in the historic Îles Ste Hélène Fort, in Montreal, Quebec. Dates are March 31st and April 1st 2007

The largest Civil War re-enactment West of the Mississippi is held in Fresno, California each year in October. This year the all-day event will also feature an exact to scale replica of the CSS Hunley, the world's first successful combat submarine used by the Confederacy during the American Civil War. The exhibit will include all the stories of it's creation, it's famous voyage and the mystery of it's disappearance.

Well in about 8 hrs I will be on the road heading to LA/Anaheim for the Dragon Expo. Armorama doesn't have a table or stand at this show (I decided against it this time around) but Vinnie and I will be at the show and would love to meet any site members or visitors who attend the show.

From 24th to 25th of September the IPMS Austria held its - so far - biggest model exhibition and contest south of Vienna.
Two special topics gave a special touch to this event:

35 year´s anniversary of the winning of the formula one racing car world championship of the famous Jochen Rind, who unfortunately died in the same year in an accident.

50 years anniversary of the founding of the Austrian armed Forces of the 2nd Republic after the Allies ended the occupation of the country.

As most of your are aware, IPMS Ottawa is hosting CAPCON 2005 and the Canadian Tamiya-Con (Open to Canadian Residents only. See our website for complete details.)
One event dominating the hobby industry in February is Spielwarenmesse 2005. The largest annual toy and hobby fair in the world, the 56th Nuremberg Toy Fair gathers 2,700 toy and hobby item manufacturers representing over 62 countries. The show closes tomorrow, so the news are still coming in. Here a short summary of what we've heard so far.
George Schachinger of Wikingers Panzermodellbau has uploaded image of the biggest plastic model exhibition in Austria. This show took place from 25th to 26th of September in Ried/I., upper Austria.

Tamiya has announced dates for this years Tamiya-con event in Orange Country, California (US). It will be help April 17 and 18th. This is the 9th year they have held this event. Modelers from all over North America will decend on Tamiya's corporate offices to battle for the awards. The contestants will be judged by no other than Shunsaku Tamiya-san himself for the Tamiya Master Modeler Award.
IPMS-Austria held their annual kit exhibition/contest between 13. and 14. September 2003 in the aircraft museum at Graz/Thalerhof.
Supercon 2003 is returning again this year thanks to the Fort Worth Scale Modelers in Fort Worth Texas. With the theme of "Machines That Changed the World", your sure to see some very interesting subjects presented.
The Plasticmodeller's clubs KPM Brno and DDM Junior Brno held their annual exhibition on June, 7th 2003 in the Technical Museum Brno/CZ.
From 12th to 13th of April modellers, traders and friends of the most beautiful hobby in the world met near the Austro-Hungarian border.
One of Austrians best model clubs, the IGM Wr. Neustadt held its annual exhibition from 29th to 30th of March in a small aircraft museum, called "Aviaticum". So not only scale models, but also the real stuff could be examined.
The entries in our first Diorama campaign have been judged and the winner has been selected. I would like to congratulate Toni (Envar) on his win with the entry, Dragon's Watch. His entry is on display in the gallery, as well as all the others. I would also like to thank Keith Magee for organizing, leading and contributing a prize for this campaign. I am sure all the guys will say that a prize wasn't really why they chose to build an entry, but winning one is certainly icing on the cake.
A twin Engine Prop Contest will be held this week at Peters&partners Hobby Shop, Jakarta Indonesia. Indonesian Scale Model Association, ISMS, will make full coverage of the event. there are currently 17 modelers listed as participants. The contest focuses on aircraft with twin propellars both from WW2 til up the present day.
The IPMS Lt. Alexander Pearson Modelers proudly annouce their annual invitational on May 31, 2003 at the Pearson Air Museum in Vancouver, Washington (USA). This years theme will celebrate the 100th year of flight.

The model club “Model friends Ried” is responsible for this biggest plastic modeling event in Austria. It is held bi-annually within two halls of the market and trading area of the town. Profiting from the central location within Europe and due to another event in the nearby halls, especially on Sunday a lot of visitors were attracted.
Legendary test pilot Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier Saturday for what he said was the last time, more than a half-century after he became the first person to accomplish the feat.
We invite you to join us October 5th 2002 on Open championship of Croatia in plastic modeling. Contest will be in "Elektrotehnicka i prometna skola" (Electrotehnical and traffic school), Istarska 1c, Osijek. You can bring your models from 8-10h, and results will be at 17h. Entry will be 40 kn for modeler. We will organize visit to Sport airport "Osijek-Cepin" where you will able to look and make photos of thier aircrafts.
The country that brought you Swiss cheese (big hint there!) chocolate, gold and banking at it's most secret, skiing in St. Moritz, the Swatch wrist watch, and the Red Cross now offers you modellism on an international scale. Euro Miniatures 2002 held in the Fribourg Canton, and the lovely Payerne valley was held in the Payerne community center over the weekend of August 30th to September the 1st.
Looks like fun, sounds like fun, must be fun! Belgiums National Convention 2002 is underway and shall take place on Sunday October 6th 2002 in Roselare Belgium. You will be able to fins that latest heart throb (albeit in plastic!) organized with the participation of numerous traders, this looks to be an interesting event.
A new museum on Cape Cod dedicated to the vast world of scale models. Subsections of the museum are : The National Scale Model Museum and The Scale Model Builders Hall of Fame. Consists of Referance and Resreach library, Art Gallery of related display art, many select artifacts, heavy emphasis on military modeling.
The 2002 Washington Armor Club and National Capital Model Soldiers Society be holding their annual show September 6-7 at the Sheraton Premier in Tysons Corner, Virginia. The theme for this years show is "D-Day to the Breakout" with judging in thirteen categories including an 'Old Dogs' category where prizes are awarded for work performed on older kits.
We are off to Switzerland over the weekend (neither Kiribati nor Seyschelles!) It looks to be a good fun time all around. This is a weekend long event held every year in the beautiful Payerne Valley, located halfway between the French Jura mountain range and Lausanne. Known as Eurominiatures 2002 and sposored by ARPFAM (now there's a mouthfull!) the Romand (rheto-romantsch language group) Association for the promotion of the Figurine and miniature art.
On Sept. 14 AMPS CT and Eastern Front AMPS will be hosting the third annual regional show, competition and vendor free-for-all at the Wayne, NJ PAL center, from 8AM to 4PMish. Fliers have been heavily distributed saying that the model limit is five. Having "done the math", given the historical turnout, and the new judging system, that would keep us there until sometime Monday, really ticking off the bingo ladies that take over the space at six! (The awards ceremony is held in a different part of the facility) Due to the short duration of the show, we have to reduce this to two models for judging, however we invite modellers to bring up to five for display.
On December 7th, 2002, the Texas town of LaVernia will take a step back in time. A unique living event will take place at 9:30 AM. The year; Late 1944. In this small village, the Axis have occupied the very heart of their center of commerce. The Allies must sweep the town free of these Axis soldiers. The jeeps, the trucks, the armor, the planes will be there.
It wasn't a long drive. Only 200 or so miles from where I live in Charlottesville to Virginia Beach. But after spending 2 and a half weeks on a cross country trip in the first half of July, I wasn't eager to drive a long distance again. My apprehension increased when I hit heavy traffic after Richmond and the 3 hr drive turned into 4 and a half. But from the moment I arrived in Virginia Beach and called up Bryan (Tin_Can) on the phone, it was smooth sailing.
The World Expo Rome 2002 show was held in Rome, Italy on July 12-14th. Eternal, ancient Rome that was the birthplace of western culture, epicentre of world tourism, was the ideal place to host such a global event like the World Expo because of the city's historical and artistic background.
