I'm a former Craftsman vehicle mechanic (aka 'vermin') in the Terratorial Army (think UK National Guard). Served for about 2yrs, was discharged almost 10yrs ago and i'm seriously considering joining the regulars at the moment.

Did my 15month with the German Bundeswehr back in 1987/88, finished as an Obergefreiter. Served with the 1. Kompanie/ Jägerbatallion 531 in Ahlen as an armed typist (30 letters or 900 rounds per minute, choose one)

Did two reserve exercises later before the end of the cold war finished first the Jägers and then reserve call-ups.

US Army 74-78 active, 78-81 Reserves

Flew Huey for SOG in the RVN 75, served with USAREUR in FRG 75-78 as a "SMLM hunter", unit armorer, and laison NCO w/ Bundeswehr, Landespolizei & Grenzschutz anti-terrorism units. Met a lot of really cool folks over there!

Q: anyone out there know about "SMLM"?

I'm mostly in WWII German armor & odds.

It's been a long time ago, but isn't it something like Soviet Military Liaison Mission? The Soviets had people legally stationed on the west side in order to keep an eye on what we were doing. I remember having an index sized card that had pictures of Soviet markings that were supposed to be on their vehicles. We called it a "Smell Um" card.

Go, George!

FYI All:

"smell-um" were one a those strange outcomes of the post-Potsdam division of Germany into 4 zones... Each "allied power" (US, UK, FR, USSR) was allowed to field an official "legal" military observer team in the other guy's zones. The team was uniformed and allowed to carry small-arms...

Think "legal spies". The mission was to look at what the other guy was doing in "his" sector... Natch, each power immediately designated various areas within their zones as being "off-limits" or "restricted" - meaning the -LM teams were not allowed to go in there and observe.

Of course, these were the ONLY places anyone actually wanted to look in!

Hence, the "SMLM hunt". The Sovs would try to sneak in and take pics of military bases and activities- and scuttle back into their authorized access areas before we could catch them. The rules were that the SMLM had full freedom and diplomatic immunity- in their authorized access areas- but if we could catch them "inflagrante" within the security or restricted zones, well...

The game was played with suped-up Benz cars and big telephoto rigs on their side, and helicopters with nite-sights and other stuff on our side.

And the chase was FUN! Think about trying to "touch-n-go" on a speeding Mercedes 600 on a country lane in the dark...

Spent 12 years with the Royal Engineers, joined '90 left 2002, two UN tours in Bosnia. I was a Combat Engineer and a Signaller. My final posting was with the unit that ran the Direct Fire Weapon Simulator system on Salisbury Plain the system was run in conjunction with Saab Training Systems. Got to spend a lot of time with kit that I wouldn't have had access to.

4 years 19D Cav Scout, '83 & '84 with 3/8 cav in Ft. Bliss (El Paso), then '85 & '86 with 3rd Cav, 8th ID in Mannhiem Germany. We used m60 A1's, then m60A3's for the tankers, and m113s, and m113 ITV's for the scouts. As I was outprocessing I saw the M1's and Bradleys roll in.

Wasn't enough to get me to re-up
