I have realised that I hate my first name. Why the hell didn't my parents call me Clint, or Dirk, or better still Ricochet?

Ricochet Ramsden......wouldn't that be the coolest name?

Even worst than my first name is my middle name.

Martin JOSEPH Ramsden. AAARRRRGGGGHHHH!!!!!!!

What were my parents thinking? How could they do that to me?

I think the reason I'm such a failure in life is purely down to the name I was given. I mean what chance would I have had of being an astronaut or pirate with my name?

I could have gone through university getting all the qualifications necessary but it would all have been in vain. All astronauts and pirates had names like BUZZ or BLACKBEARD. I could have been the best astronaut or pirate EVER but never got the chance because of my stupid name.

You could have been cursed with Orlando Harold like my father or Marleen like my mom. My dad has alays been known as Joe as far back as I can remember. Me, my folks hated their names so much they took the two most popular when I was born Steven Michael. Now days everone wants unusual ames...so much so that they have been commonplace. Like Caitlen or Brittney or Joshua / Jordon. Blaming your name for failure to become a pirate or astronaut is your own fault...make your own name up and tell folks to call you that

Think yourself lucky Martin....

John Wayne's name was Marion...???
How about Bing...Bing Ramsden...has a ring to it.
Or Thong Ramsden...slightly oriental sounding. You could go all hi-tech like and drop the sden...Thong Ram.

I'm happy with my name...but my middle name has taken a long time to get used to...Arthur. But I don't mind it now. Aquired taste.
And my wife calls me Compo, spoken with a Polish accent of course.

Cheers
Peter

While I don't mind my first name, Geoffrey or Geoff, when I was growing up I really disliked my middle name. As I was the first born my parents stuck me with my mothers maiden name, Elliott! Could have been worse though, my paternal grandfathers first name was Riddley.

Hi Joe, actually I don't hate the name "Martin" or "Joseph" when I hear other people being called by those names. It's just I hate being called by those names myself. I think the problem with Joseph stems from at school when the Christmas nativity play came along, I was always forced to be Joseph. As a lad of 6 years old I didn't want to be saddled with a wife and kid, I had other things like football and Action Man toys on my mind.
Plus every time I got in trouble the teachers would insist on shouting out my whole name when giving the bollocking.
"MARTIN JOSEPH RAMSDEN! STOP DOING THAT, IT'S DISGUSTING!!!!"

The terrible torture from my childhood caused by my name probably explains my warped personality.

Martin Ramsden? Hmm, doesn't sound so bad. Kind of rolls off the tongue. You could take a cool nickname like Marauder or Mauler, like the aircraft manufacturer. What the heck, it could be worse. You could be named Uranus Fillmore.

I was named after my grandfather. Kind of confusing when I was a kid, but I got used to it.

Martin sounds like an allright name, I'll trade names with you! my name is Gaston, and I have never met anyone with that name, I have not heard of it too much. I once was playing battlefield 1942 in the free French army and one of them had my name so I guess it could be French. When I meet new people and they ask for my name they are like "What? no really what is your name?" :-) :-) :-)

Life is simple...Get yourself over to the British equivalent of our probate court. Take out legal papers and change your name to Dirk or Richochet or whatever you choose. There may be a small fee for this, but you don't need a lawyer/barister.

As far as how you want to be addressed, just introduce by saying "I'm Martin Ramden but please call me Richochet."

As to Martin...
Consider
Martin Luther (Religious reformer)
Martin Luther King, Jr. (American Civil Rights leader)
Steve Martin (Comedian)
Martin Landau (actor)
Ricky Martin (Singer)
Martin Guitars
Aston Martin (as in DB5, James Bond's famous car)
Dean Martin (Actor/singer)
Lockheed Martin (Aircraft company)
Martin Scorsese (Director of such great films as Taxi Driver, Casino, Raging Bull, etc.)
George Martin (Beatles producer)
Mark Martin (NASCAR driver)
Martin Sheen (Actor)
Martin Lawrence (Comedian)

Grumpyoldman already brought up an American Sculptor but I have something even better:
Meet Gaston la Gaffe

A very lazy office help who rather plays around then do his work. Brilliant comic I have them all at home but then in dutch as I`m kinda bad in speaking and reading french. In Dutch his name is even nicer: Guust Flater :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

Hey Rico, (I can hear the goverment official asking you to spell your name Rico chet, what?)

I know what you mean. I hate my middle name Kenneth. Those that I have know by the name of Kenneth all have been dorks. But having said that I probably will meet up with someone, some day that will make the name dignified in my mind. Just haven't met them yet...

I've got a friend whose name is Richard Lambden, who goes by Slippy. Always has, always will. The teachers in school even called him by Slippy in roll-call, don't know how he got that to happen...

No problem with my name but I hate the use of the middle name... You know you're in trouble when the middle name is used.

I understand that you can legally call yourself anything you like, as long as it's not to deceive. I heard once of a fella who had to have a strange name in order to get his inheritance. Say it was Rumpelstiltskin. He would just say it was pronounced Martin, or whatever.

I used to HATE Rodger, especially the way my mum decided to spell it, with the D. Now I rather like it. That said I swear that Halfyank is as much my name as Rodger ever was. I'm known to more people now that way than I probably ever was as Rodger.

Only my mum still calls me David, to everyone else I'm Dave; which I much prefer. I always really wanted my middle name to be my first name - Iain, spelt the celtic way after my Scots ancestors on my mothers side.

I kinda like my name -- lots of R's ... Robert Arthur Kerr.

Most folks just call me "Bob," but I have had some rather colorful nicknames during my Army service and time as a prison guard ... I can't repeat most of them in polite company.

So...you guys are complaining..well..how about being named Mary Alice....i dont mind the name Mary at all..but when i was young and in school.. I didn't just get Mary...no....it had to be Mary Alice. I just hate it...So after i got older and could somewhat control the situation...i became simply Mary. i rarely use my middle name..unless it is required.

I rather enjoy my name: Grumpy Old Man........... :-) :-) :-) :-)
My mother was religious so she covered both the Old and New Testaments ....... David Matthew.........
:-) :-) :-) now knowing that good old David wasn't exactly an angel,(remember he bumped off the babes' hubby to score with her) nor was Matthew (who was Levi the tax-collector, a rather shady employment in those days) makes me wonder what Mum was thinking when she named me...... :-) :-) :-)
Always been called Dave..... except when in trouble the Mum would yell "DAVID"...... and I knew for sure the gig was up when I heard "DAVID MATTHEW" shouted across the neighborhood.

Well, as this is morphing into our name histories...
Full name is Alfred Joseph, hence the AJ, but everyone calls me Al.
My father wanted to name me after his hero, Ted Williams, (how cool would that have been! ) but my mother prevailed, as she would throughout their lives together :-) and I was named after my two grandfathers, sort of. The Joseph was shortened down from Josephat.

I have always been known as Frank, but was called after my grandfather ..Francis ... and thats what is on the birth cert.
Frankly (!) I can live with Frank, as Francis annoys me big time .... and hopefully this does not come back to haunt me ... but in gaelic, its Prónsías. At school I used to get called that, all the time by the teachers and it still bugs me, to this day!
