I graduated from high school halfway through my senior year (had all the credits I needed) in January 1983...ten days later I was in basic training at age 17...had my 18th birthday 9 days into basic...did a stint with the Ohio NG straight out of active duty and the Reserves in '94...now I'm pushing 40 and wish I could go back in...may even try to...

I was thinking of joining the Navy because of 4 years of NJROTC. My navy recruiter went AWOL, so I joined the Army 2 weeks after graduating High School.

18 years old

8 years of funky good times

18.I joined after High School.Went to Knox.Maxed out the ASVAB tests.Me and another guy were called into the CO's office in Basic and offered West Point .I figured 4 yrs, plus another 4 years, and drive a desk.Not.
I made the right choice. The only Great Officer I worked with was a battlefield commission from The Nam,he understood enlisted guys. All the west pointers we got were scary ,no sense.Good at book learning, but no mechanical apptitude. Not how to be in Armor. (++) (++)

Joined High School Army JROTC at 14 (1959). Graduated at 16 and entered North Georgia Military College. Graduated as a brand new Second Lieutenant of Infantry at 20. Retired at 44. Taught high school ROTC for 3 years. Spent 3 years as Commandant of Cadets at a small military school. Took the uniform off for good in 1995. My son joined the USMC at 18 just this past year. He loves it and I sometimes miss it very much.

At 20 I joined the infantry reserves in my hometown and at 22 was "called up" to lovely Wainwright, Alberta. Four years in PPCLI (regular infantry, one of three regiments in Canada). Five years ago, I grew out of that and remustered to mechanic. 10 years down, only 25 to go! Whoo hoo!

I was drafted in 1968, just after I turned 18. I struggled through basic , but loved it all after that! My only regret was they kept me in the states. US Army.
