I joined the USMC at 17; but, did not ship out to Boot Camp until I was 18. When out unit celebrated the Marine Corps Birthday while in the Gulf, I was the youngest marine. I served six years and separated as a corporal (E4). I would have been a sergeant; but, my MOS (0351--TOW Gunner) was frozen for over two years.

I was 18 and turned 19 two months after enlisting in the US Army. Wound up in the 1st Infantry Division at Ft Riley, Kansas, C Company, Fourth Platoon, Third Squad, 701st Maintenance Battalion crewing on an M88 Recovery Vehicle. All I wanted to do was get the hell away from Long Island, New York and the Army was my ticket out. And I never went back....

I signed up when I was 17. Mom and I signed the papers and I did 3 months delayed entry until I graduated high school. Two weeks after graduation I was in boot, turned 18 on th rifle range. A "buddy" of mine told the DI it was my birthday. I spent the better part of the day on my face doing pushups.

I joined the Army National Guard in March, 1981, initially as a way to pay for college.

I'll have to retire in a couple years. Best part-time job I know of!

I signed up right out of college. By the time I got to BCT I was 22, but I wasn't the "old man" in the platoon. We had a guy from Eastern Europe in our platoon, I think he was in his mid-30s.

Joined the Army Cadets at 12 yearsold. At 17 joined the T.A. (63 Sigs Sgn,(SAS)). Then at 18 and half joined the Royal Marines, (1969). Had my 19th birthday whilst in training. 25 years later the gates closed behind me and I had no ID card to return, (1994). Once a Marine Always a Marine.

There is no better feeling than spending your birthday on the quarterdeck getting smoked while you sing happy birthday to yourself. I had two weeks left until we graduated boot camp, managed to keep my birthday a secret for a few hours. I guess the Marine Corps is really fond of making you feel good on your B-Day!!! I'll Semper Fi!
