Andy,
Thats the one thing I hate about the internet more than anything, the lack of accurately being able to express yourself as you would if we were all in a room talking. Sorry for my smart assed remarks, I was totally oblivious to the fact that you were trying to make a joke, and got in a huff over what you meant in jest.

I'm taking my History education to the PhD level, and I'm also an archaeology student. I've watched the History Channel forever along with the History Channel International and the Military Channel. I have to say being well trained in the art of research, and knowing how accurate one has to be with research, the History Channel drops the ball on almost every subject they cover. If I did work like that I would be laughed out of college.
I would like to see their sources for some of the claims they make on the informative shows. Going to their website, that sort of information is sparse or non-existent. In the next paper I write, I will use this footnote for every claim:
1 The History Channel said so
I enjoy the channels for the entertainment though. It makes history available to the layman. Wrong or right it is being talked about.
But, I am like most of you, and I have to say "what the hell are they talking about?" more often than not.

On another note, I always had a huge problem with Hollywood. P-51 tank busters? You know what I'm talking about......

You know, that one line has ALWAYS bothered me, no matter how many times I see that! So did they totally make that up? I dont think I ever heard it before.

And the problem is they easily could have used a P-47 which would have fit the script a lot better. I believe there are numerous flying P-47's that could have been used.

The thing about the History Channel, or any of the shows on any channel (aside from Nat'l Geo for the most part) is that you HAVE to take it as 'entertainment'. We're all here complaining about the inaccuracies in the shows, yet if we hadn't at some point been spurred to develop a real interest in our subjects and do our own research, we wouldn't be able to spot the inaccuracies in the programs. The way I see it, the History Channel is 'light watching'; if it provides me with a small bit of information that sparks my interest, I can take my own steps to find out more in depth (and accurate!) information on the subject. And perhaps that spark will push someone else to learn about things. All in all I think they do an alright job of packaging things in the format they are restricted to-a 30 or 60 minute slot that has these huge holes cut in it called "advertisement" without which they wouldn't have the $$$ to put up said programs. And lets face it.......at least the shows on HC are nowhere near as, ahem, "dry", as most of the ones we used to watch on PBC or BBC.

To all of my British, Australian and New Zealander colleagues out there...my HUMBLEST apologies for insulting you or your country.
I mistook humorous post for a serious one. Sorry Andy!

i love my country and am proud of it's history..but there was no need to go on the rant that I did. I should have taken my Dad's advice and cooled down before responding to this thread.

I'm still serious about the Disco thing, though!

As you can see, there are still some deep rooted issues that need to be addressed/resolved...even amongst friends and allies.

I agree with you all.

Just remember that the job of these channels is to MAKE MONEY! They'll do it anyway that they can. They simply feed the masses what the masses want and are able to sell advertising in there. The shame lies in the distortion of the truth.

Ahh, good ol' capitalism at it's best!

Just thought of one thing when it comes to Discovery, History and Military Channel and their likes. How many of them that work with these tv channels, is actually interested in history, military or not?;)
Shouldn't that be sort of a requirement? Wouldn't you just love to work with Military or History Channel or Discovery? I know that I would.... :-)

Of course it is easy to bash everything. You have the time to research in intricate detail a subject near and dear to your heart. The History channel is trying to get some format of knowledge out there. They produce thousands of hours of information a year ranging from ancient history, military history, gosh... history of candy, cereal, automobiles.etc, etc, etc Sure they goof all the time, but most schools in the United States for years taught us that the Civil War was fought to free the slaves. For over 100 years the Apartasaurus was called the Brontosaurus. Did you know for almost 50 years most people believed that USS Arizona was sunk by a bomb falling down its smokestack. The internet gets it wrong. My wife was writing a paper on the Boy Scouts of America and wrote that the National Headquarters was in Washington Dc. It has been in Irving Texas for over 30 years now. So in the scheme of things, how important is it where or who invented the DD Sherman

Plenty! I don't have a problem with the producers/researchers/etcetc not knowing the facts behind the subject matter, but to state what they purport to be the truth, is a different kettle of fish...
Oh, and Bodeen I'm allowed one freeby at you, being an Aussie and all...
Japan was never interested in occupying Australia

That's not what my buddy Matsuru told me.....He said he's 100% sure Japan wanted to invade Australia because....he saw it on the HISTORY CHANNEL!!!!!

I'm just gonna shut up and leave this thread ALONE!!!!!!!

Haven't I been shamed enough...Oh the Humanity (saw that on the History Channel too )

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend...what's left of it.

There are two things Ive learned about the internet in all these years; always wait to send out a flame, and never play Call of Duty drunk.

Just been watching the History Channel and Kursk. They said that the T-34 was the best designed tank in WWII. What's your opinion?

Don't know why they can't do it right, but for sure they can't.

Because they have not figured out that truth is more interesting than fiction.

I seldom watch the History Channel for this very reason.

As I understand it, this was because of the radical design of the sloped hull causing shells to simply bounce off. It sure isn't because of aesthetics!

Hi all,
I ditched the cable TV and got satellite a couple of years ago. I found an interesting thing called the Military Channel. I watch it, it is better researched than History. Has great shows, one is on the old Soviet Air Force which gives an unjaundiced view of their aircraft.
History Channel is in my dustbin of what I watch.
