Hey guys! I thought of making a thread on some gadgets/materials/etc. that we use in making models. I know some of these have been posted in the "Stores" thread, but I just wanted to make a thread which could be more organized perhaps? Given that no other thread like this exists of course!

Ayun.

Well, to start this off, I'd like to share this "stuff" I found. It's called "Paper-Tac", sa ACE ko siya nabili and I've seen some people use it for fastening tiny parts to be sprayed, or brush painted onto BBQ sticks or any painting-support surface for that matter. It comes in 4 little bars, and costs around Php 69 pesos

Jomz: That is a greate idea, at least everybody will have access to some of the stuffs. The thread could also include those things that we never knew could be helpful in a way in our scale modeling activities....

So that was the name "Paper-Tac", I was trying to find it yesterday at SouthMall, but I could not remember the name...see it already helped.

Great idea jomz! Ako naman :-)

Punta kayo Carolina's (or Caroline's) Lace Shop or any other shop that sells beads and such. Kung may gf or asawa kayo malamang nakapasok na kayo dito against your will. May nakuha akong needle-nose pliers doon worth 60 pesos. Smooth ang jaws nito at manipis kaya helpful for bending and shaping stuff. May jewelry wire din dun for around 5 bucks. These are great if you want to replace thick plastic grab-handles or antennas.

I heard pantyhose has a great many applications in the hobby - parts retriever, paint smoother, camo netting, etc. etc. ad nauseum. :-)

you can also use stockings for replicating scale carbon fiber effect for car hoods etc. use it as a mask when spraying to get the patern to the hood surface :-)

haha! ako naman I was looking for a very soft brush for the car I'm making, so I went to the cosmetics section -- and asked for the softest blush-on-brush? they had. Do the math, kinabahan yung babae saken eh, but nonetheless helped me out. Pero sobrang mahal pala nung mga yun! Halos Php 350 a pop! Haha!

Wow! Nice Idea Cris! Masubukan nga next time yan!

I've been to aquarium shops lately, looking for a syphon hose for making exhaust tips, at ang dami ko nang straws! Nag-eexperiment kasi sa pag gawa nang exhaust. I found the cocktail-straws to be one of the roundest around you can get, although it's a bit thinner than the ones used in Jollibee et. al.

Hwaw! 60 peso pliers, ala-Long nose ba -- the one's used by Engineers.

Oh yeah, I found a lamp with a magnifying glass sa national, for the extreme-detailer in all of us iwas sira pa nang mata sa kaka squint. Sells for around Php 1,200? Pwede na IMO.

Guys! I'm looking for some really small drill-bits, the one's sold in ACE and other hardware stores just aren't small enough. I know Tamiya has some proprietary drill bits for their pin-vises, pero I'm not yet ready to splurge Php 400++ on a set, whilst I can get a set for cheaper perhaps? I'm not familiar with the measurements eh.

If you're looking for the drill, better buy the Black and Decker RTX. Very very useful! Polishing, grinding, sanding and drilling. All in one! Variable speed, good for tought jobs like on walls and low speed for us modelers! The drawback is, mahal talaga sya! P8000! He needs high speed, I use low speed. BTW, napapalitan yung head nya. Pwede maglagay ng drill head the size of 5mm

Maraming mga jewelers screwdrivers pero di naman useful 'to for me. 0.5mm drill bits also sound good especially since I've started replacing handholds and tie downs with wire.

Jeep: can you get me a pair or three drill bits of .5mm? I had to buy three sets of the Academy drill bit sets (at P645 apiece - OUCH!) within (tada!) 2 years (tatanga-tanga kasi ako, eh) because I always broke the .5mm drill bit - which is the most useful bit IMO for me. How much is it?

0.5mm. This, IMO, is the most useful drill bit size for me. Like Jeep, I use it to make small holes to replace the fragile plastic handles or molded on tie-downs with wire. Make two holes, insert wire, glue (from the inside) with superglue, and presto - a realistic, more robust, handle/tie-down.

Jomz: hehehe yeah, would make a nice sling for the trebuchet hehehe

Thanks for the many tips Blitz!

Jeep: My wish list - sheet styrene, quantity 2 if it's around 12-inches by 12-inches, or something that big. Just text me when you're there if there's no such size. Around 0.040" thickness, and the 0.5mm drill bit - 2 if it's affordable enough. My budget is around, oh, P500. Thanks!

Shet...gusto kita halikan! hehehe! Pero astig tong listahan mo.

Wow! Styrene sheets? You remember what bran they carried, is it the basic Evergreen brand or some industrial grade na styrene? Of course, would you remember the prices, too?

shonen masyado malaki yung 5mm pare, and I know the RTX tool you're talking about, and I find it too expensive, and albeit limited sa use since limited yung size nang tip niya (limited as in masyadong malaki).

I inquired sa ACE, and they have this cheaper, hand-drill, around 1,600 siya and industrial grade pa! It's capable of getting up to .5mm ata eh. I forgot the brand, but they have it boxed, not on display together with the Stanley and Black and Decker tools.

I just learned the other week there were two types of pin-vises, may mas malaki which they essentially call a 'router', the sizes of the drill bits/routers I wasn't able to take down, plus the smaller and finer pin-vise, the larger one goes for around a flat Php 600, while the smaller one goes for around Php 400.

Stocking-Trebuchet! HEHE!

jomz, i'm afraid na hindi "branded" and styrene sheet. it' s locally produce -our very own) a sheet of styrene is about 3' x 8' so you can just imagine how long it will last. when i buy plastic sheet i asked them to roll it , or you can personally ask them to cut it . i am not sure with they're price list .the last the time i bought was 2 years ago. actually it's not just McDowell who sells -HIGH IMPACT POLYSTYRENE sheet. if you have time you can check out the yellow pages under "plastic suppliers" the only problem i had before is getting a .2mm plastic sheet so I called a couple of manufacturers and found one near our place. they managed to make a roll -about 20 kilos about 5000 pesos.. it's for my former office.
the only setback with our styrene sheet is that it gets yellowish for a period of time. unlike evergreen or imported plastic sheet. maputi pa rin. pero price wise syempre sa atin pa rin.
GI- i guess your budget is more than enough..

3 FEET by 8 FEET!?!?!?!?! Oh my goodness gracious... enough to last, what, SEVERAL LIFE TIMES (and I've been alive for 5,000 years!). #:-)

Goodness... 3 FEET by 8 FEET! I can build a house with that size of sheeting!

BTW, regarding those sheets, is it of the same quality/strength of Squadron and Evergreen? I notice Squadron's styrene is a bit tougher than Evergreen, the latter being soft. Maybe the plastic sheeting you mentioned is the hard type, similar to those used in clipboards.
