It looks like it's always more difficult to get the young involved in modeling.
The interest in handycraft has decresed a lot... and who's benefited from that ?
Sega, Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft... computer gaming has been the big thing
for quite a few years now. One hobby doesn't necessarily exclude the other one,
but when you've spent the evening playing on the computer there's just no time left
for modeling (first hand experience).

Thanks Sgt. Treef, Yes the problem is that there are the middle men, importers, which invarialbly eases access but at a price. Unfortunately the cost of resin (brute) continues to rise, as does the cost of other materials (rubber etc). Furthermore, the drop, not only in sales, but also in the number of people practicing the hobby, is already in significant decline. We need to get the young involved, to reassess their needs, and be able to make what we have to offer, competitive with all the existant eye candy which currently abounds. i have "taken on board two local kids (16) and they are firmy hooked, but tyou need to follow up with the sme enthusiasme, and perseverence. There is also a sacrifice involved, I give them significant discounts across the board, wjich is not only logical, but good business sense as well. Other manufacturers should be pushed into such initiatives I believe. I take them to shows when they are nearby, open my library for their perusal, and hand over magazines, and assorted tiems for their use. Believe me any "sacrifice" is quickly forgotten, in the light of theier gratitude and the glow they get from that "modelling high".

Bearing this in mind I'd like to throw a suggestion out to the powers at large. Jim why not set up an album called Juniors corner or similar. I think like my idea for rougues gallery, it might be stimulating.

Hi Capt,

I totally agree with you, I think there is a decline in our hobby nowadays, with all the other more accessable and easy to have fun quick hobbies, such as PS2, or computer games...

I built model from 12 to 15, then I discovered girls, then it's uni, and job, it takes me 13 years and a couple break up to make me realize that deep down inside me, in the dark closet that I dare not to peep in, there is a modeller inside...so here I am, picked up the hobby again 8 months ago and never looked back....

But I am optimist, I don't think that our hobby will ever die, I am sure that 2000 years ago, there were some nuts whom were trying to build a small replica of a catapult for his kid or just to put it next to his collection of Roman Legion uniforms and breastplate, and 2,000 years from now on, there will still be some cyber-hyber-alien nuts whom are building a replica of M4000A1 battle tank armed with photon gun..... #:-)

Yes Dave,

With a great optimistic spirit such as yours how can it possibly fail? Too bad we can't put the Armorama thing in a can That way we could have a sip everytime we felt a little off. But then visiting the site is the next best thing to being there!

You've got a great attitiude Dave, hang on to that!!

What's amazing is that I have the feeling that what takes me away from the hobby usualy eventualy
takes me back to it.
I love japanese animation. And when watching some, I can't model (how would I read the subtitles ?)...
But after watching a good series, I tend to look for kits or resin figures from it !
Also, after spending several evenings flying virtual warplanes, I get back to plame models !
Just as Dave, I think that there will always be modelists, even though the numbers may decrease. Then, the problem
will be for the buisiness...

hey penpen,
i like anime too(sometimes hentai, but i won't talk about that), on Saturday nights they show a lot of anime on the Cartoon Network. from 10 pm to 1am cdt. i like robots, spaceships and big explosions. but, i could never get into the modeling end of it, too much of a treadhead and figure painter. and i guess i like duller colors(robots are too bright).

well that is the ugliest dog i have ever seen. #:-)

Thanks Tread (I think!)

I admit that I'd rather be a Pip than a:
1. Pimp
2. A Pimple
3. A Pamplamousse (especially an orange one!)
4. A pipe (sorry smoker)
5. A pipe smoking pimp with a puss like a pamplamousse covered in pimples!!

Jack be a Pip!

O.K. Capt., I give up. What in Hade's is a pamplamousse? A flower?

I think I torqued a few synapses trying to figure what file drawer it was in, in my brain.

Ooouuuucccch!

Apparently someone's been messing sround with my files. #:-)

I think Captain Jack is talking about a grapefruit. That's how you say it in French. I suppose at one point in its life cycle a grapefruit is a flower, so you're kinda right.

Thanks Folgore,

Even knowing that I'm microscopically right helps. I just hate it when my brain refuses to work like it used to. One of those 'getting old' things I guess.

Tread.

P.S. This even goes back to my earlier post about being able to speak frog, er, I mean French.

Soooooooo..........Tread you read the book as well, good on ya! Sorry about the linguistic lapsus. #:-) Lost control and allowed my tongue to work faster than my brain. That can be dangerous, especially if you've got it wrapped around a plate of pasta al fresco..OOPS
