I've asked this question other places and all I here is CSI. I don't care for it and all the grab em and shock em garbage. It's been a long time since I've ever really looked forward to watching anything on TV. Am I missing something? Is there anything on that I can say, "Hey, it's Friday, 9:00pm, Dad's show is on, shhhh." So I ask this community, as we have some things in common, anything good on the TV?

Most of TV is degrading into "reality" TV and/or shock TV. Personally, I like the History Channel, but even they have some shows not worth watching.

I remember, not many years ago there would be show I would not miss - but now - who cares...

This is why there are DVDs, VCR's and GameCubes -

Personally my family and I really like CSI but I understand it's not everybody's cup of tea. Frankly we're watching less and less regular TV, opting for shows on satellite instead. I feel kind of sorry for my kids because they're just not as many "Hey, it's Friday, 9:00pm, Dad's show is on, shhhh" as there was when I was a kid. Of course we had about seven stations then, three networks and four locals. Not the 100 plus stations we have now.

From what I've seen recently, there's not much good on at all. Many people have recommended 24, but I haven't ever had the chance to sit down and watch it.

If I sit down to watch TV now it's usually for only a couple of things: Either the Simpsons, or sports. Thank goodness for DVD. Now I can just go get entire season of the Simpsons, Family Guy, X-Files etc and not even have to deal with the TV.

When our universal remote died I though I'd go mad. It isn't that bad after all. Discovery and Cartoon Network are just one channel apart and if I have those two I'm a happy camper

Oh, come on, there's lots on TV. Some of my faves are American Chopper, American Hotrod, American Casino and Monster Garage on Discovery and, Mail Call on History Channel. Plus, there are National Geographic stuff running almost all the time, and I can always go check out hunting and fishing shows on OLN or one of the other sports networks on cable. Most sitcoms are pretty lame, but I do like most of the CSI stuff, though I usually guess what's going on because I watch a lot of the true crime shows on CourtTV, Discovery, History Channel and others.

Soon football season starts, so that will take my attention all day Saturday, day and night Sundays, Monday nights and a few Thursday nights, too!

Go Badgers and Packers!

Three best shows on tv:
1. Simpsons
2. The Shield
3. The Daily Show

And almost everything on The History Channel, Discovery Wings and Discovery Times

The answer to your question is no. Popular TV is hopeless wasteland of mind-numbingly vapid mediocrity and bad taste. For any with a pulse reality shows(which I have never seen nor need to view) and sitcoms simply suck beyond the capacity to comprehend. My boob-tube is set on the History Channel, Speed Channel or the occasional politically incorrect(for contemporary sissies) scary so-called right-wing political fare. At least pro football is just around the corner.

if you think american tv is bad, try ours!

i know you can get bbc over there, so try watching eastenders. you will soon consider yourselves blessed to have the sort of shows you have! :-)

we get alot of your shows on satelite and cable, and some are good(cop shows etc) and some are garbage, but the same could be said of ours.

the best stuff we have is the old stuff,

porridge, only fools and horses, fawlty towers etc etc, do they show any of those?

cheers

Other than occasionally the news or educational programs, I don't watch TV any more. The reason TV is called a medium is because it is neither rare, nor well done.

To compensate for this, I watch A LOT of movies.

Hell, Joe, they even cancelled EastEnders here!

Speaking of Fridays, there are a few new shows on the History Channel that may be worth watching...

My Man Matt! I look forward to catching SG-1 and I like the start that Stargate Atlantis has going. I think they're worth it.

I too look forward to the NFL coming back to TV this year - GO BROWNS!

Other than that, I tend to watch the Sci-Fi Channel and Discovery Science more than anything else to feed the brain. The rest of TV programming kills brain cells...

About the only new show I try not to miss is "The 4400" on USA. The first 2 episodes were pretty good. Other than that I just love Iron Chef on the Food Network and just about anything on the History or Discovery channels.

Browns? Packers? You guys better hop on the Colts bandwagon before it gets full...

Surprised no one has mentioned Monk yet, that's a great show! Tony Shalub is great as "the defective detective", he's got OCD which puts him into some hilarious predicaments but he also has an eye for detail unlike anyone else. Definitely check it out on USA if you haven't, it's a fun 'lite' murder mystery show that is more comedy than anything else but very enjoyable.

Of course CSI rules, really happy with CSI: NY getting my boy Gary Sinise, should be good!

Baseball and football ( the REAL football )

History Channel etc.

I saw "Rescue Me" on FX last night, darn good show. Leary did his research, the show seems to catch the fire service mentality pretty well. Some spots were slow, but all in all very well done.
The last few scenes of the Brothers coping with their demons was powerful, especially Leary's character dealing with his nightmare memories struck home with me in a very big way.
Good show, check it out.

Thought I would go ahead and post this here even though it is a bit

Jorja Fox and George Eads got fired. They will no longer be on CSI. This sucks...

Well, I'm going on the fact that I've never had cable, so I have about thirteen channels to choose from. Friday, 9:00, hmm? PBS is always a great channel, just read the TV WEEK, check for Nova, Secrets of the Dead, and other good stuff. It's pretty cool. Thanks for your time.

Personally, I like Nip/Tuck on Tuesday night. It is so quirky you never know what to expect....from drug lords shipping liquid cocaine in breast implants to a plastic surgeon working on a dog and then giving it mouth to mouth trying to revive it. And that was last year's season ender. This year (3 episodes in ) has been kinda wild so far.

If you don't have cable, PBS is a pretty good substitute. I also like Nova, Secrets of the Dead, as well as Antiques Roadshow and History Detectives.

I can't get into this show. I don't like anyone on it, nor do I care what happens to them. I watched the whole first season and started watching this one, but was either grossed out or sick of the characters by the second show.

The Shield is a much better show on FX. I've worked in law enforcement, so I suppose I understand the duality of the job and the temptations, as well as the "blue shield" of silence when someone gets caught doing something not by the book. The Shield is over the top when it comes to gritty realism -- the politics, the gangs, the police BS ... I love it. It makes NYPD Blue (another fave) look like CHiPs.

nowadays tv is 70 channels, maybe 1 good thing on if you're lucky. Though I have taken a liking to the adult swim block on Cartoon Network (Family guy, Futurama, and some independent and pretty funny cartoons)

Thank you to a fine community. I hope others benefit from the postings. I will take a close look, try out a show or two, and see if something keeps me coming back. I hope this thread continues for awhile.
