On All Quiet- I saw 2 listed on Netflix, one from 1930 and one fron 1979. Is the 79 one the remake or is there a later one?

anybody remember a WWI jungle warfare movie I think was in the Phillipines called Warkill? I remember seeing as a kid about 40 years ago and the scenes with the rats going into the caves to chase out the Japanese gave me nightmares!
The Big Red One (my old unit)
The Blue Max
The Longest Day
Full Metal jacket
Run Silent, Run Deep
Tora, Tora, Tora
Das Boot
U-571
Band of Brothers
Saving Private Ryan

One film almost nobody has seen that I highly recommend is a film about WWII called Black Book (2006). it is usually bunched in with the gratuitous sex, T&A genre, but is absolutely nothing of the kind! it's directed by the guy who did Basic Instinct and Total Recall, Paul Verhoeven. It's about a Jewish woman hiding out in Holland who has plans to escape that go awry. She becomes involved with the underground and as part of her mission seduces an SS commander. It is a hell of a good movie, great story, superb acting, and great cinematography! There is no nudity and sex stuff in it that doesn't pertain to the storyline and it isn't overly done. In fact, there's damn little of it.

Gee, I can only add one that I think hasn't been mentioned yet. I wish I could find it on DVD -

Pursuit of the Graf Spee

The only one i've seen listed that I don't have on my top 10 list is A Bridge Too Far. The constant attempts at "cutesy" dialogue ruin it for me.

All these movies previously posted are very good and top my list but a couple that I didn't see are;

Patriot
300

and
M.A.S.H.

It may not have had all typical fighting going on throughout, but it is still a war movie just done in a more comidic sense.

Gentlemen your lists are very good. I remember seeing a movie titled (The Bridge) back in the late 50's or early 60's. I've never seen it again.

For me Jody the best war film made to date would probably be in my opinion WE WERE SOLDIERS in terms of accuracy with it being based on true events (apart from the gunship raid on the Vietnamese base at the end which i can't recall reading about in the book by Hal Moore and Joe Galloway :-[ )

I remember seeing this film when I was a kid, and being really impressed: The Long Day's Dying. It's the film Peter Collinson made immediately before The Italian Job, and starts David Hemmings and Tom Bell. Haven't seen it on TV for years, and apparently isn't available on DVD, so if it comes up on TV, watch it!

Then there's one of my faves from the 1950s, not really a war film but does have some combat scenes: A Time to Love and A Time to Die. Your wife or girlfriend will probably enjoy it with you. The director's own son was killed on the Eastern Front. Here is the plot:

In 1944, a company of German soldiers on the Russian front are numbed by the horrors and hardships of war when Private Ernst Graeber's long awaited furlough comes through. Back home in Germany, he finds his home bombed. While hopelessly searching for his parents, he meets lovely Elizabeth Kruse, daughter of a political prisoner; together they try to wrest sanity and survival from a world full of hatred.
