"Battleground"

This film was almost an instant classic when it was released in 1949. The witer was actually in Bastogne during the BOTB. They also hired 20 veteran paratroopers to train the actors and act as extras 50 years before Spielberg and Hanks did it.

Great flick that has held up against all of the CGI Hollywood can thow at it. I remember seeing it when I was about 10 and thinking how sad it was when the trooper got killed trying to get his boots...

Shaun

Yeah, this was great! Starred Van Johnson, and The man with the golden gun fella

I would like to nominate the John Frankenheimer 1965 black & white war film “The Train” starring Burt Lancaster.

I'm trying to track down some of the locations used which were Acquigny and Gargenville.

Does anyone have any information in this regards?

Thanx John-B

Nice lists and I think just about every really great film was covered except one....The 300 Spartans. From what I have read, this one was not too ar out of whack with History. I'ld like to say that the last Alamo movie (Billy Bob version) was pretty damm good. And (oh boy here it comes) about 25 minutes of Pearl Harbor

Days of Our Lives

Could you mean The Best Years of our Lives? It's about three soldiers, Dana Andrews, Frederic March, and Harold Russell, who return home after the war and find that home has changed for them. Russell was a man who lost both hands during the war and had metal claws for hands.

IMDB Article

If this isn't the movie you meant it still should be mentioned. It's not a "war movie" per se, but it's a great picture that shows what happened to a lot of service people when they returned home.

Actually, looking back over you guys' posts I realize that 'Enemy at the Gates', 'We Were Soldiers Once' and 'Heartbreak Ridge' made my All-Time Worst list in That Other Thread!

Top Ten....
1. Dogs Of War - Christopher Walken at his creepiest
2. A Bridge Too Far - Sean Connery, Michael Caine AND Edward Fox in the same movie??? wow....
3. Bridge At Remagen - George Segal was great
4. Lighthorsemen - wonderful! and historically accurate period piece
5. Dambusters - thrilling, edge of your seat history lesson
6. 633 squadron - some of the best flying sequences ever....real Mosquitos roaring in over the coast....wonderful
7. Guns Of Navarone - Gregory Peck at his best
8. The Hunters - to heck with the acting, the real star was my favorite airplane ...the F-86 Sabre
9. Das Boot - submarine warfare at its very best - long stretches of boredom punctuated by moments of extreme terror and panic
10. The Big Red One - what's not to like about Lee Marvin as the grizzled vet.

In it's own league and probably the definitive work.... Band Of Brothers. Compared to this., there are no other war films.

Really enjoyable film - specially Robert Wagner's attempts to be hip

Have to admit that the Bridges at Toko-Ri edges it out slightly in terms of 50s aviation technology (IMHO)

Wow, what a question! For me (no real order, as I cut-n-pasted, but boldface are particular favorites) and for different reasons:

The Sand Pebbles
A Piece Of Cake (Battle of Britain mini-series)
Blue Max
Dawn Patrol
Das Boot
The Enemy Below
Twelve O'Clock High
Command Decision
Battle of Britain
The Hunters
The War Lover
The Longest Day
A Bridge Too Far
Battleground
Band of Brothers
The Bridges at Toko Ri
We Were Soldiers
Full Metal Jacket
The Wild Geese
Blackhawk Down

I only included WWI - 1980s. Earlier wars would be Zulu, Gettysburg and Glory.

Did anybody mention "The Siege at Firebase Gloria?"

A great low budget Vietnam war movie with R. Lee Ermey as a recon unit leader.

What a magnificent topic! Here goes mine, a few fun ones I haven't seen mentioned. In order:

Where Eagles Dare: Richard Burton AND Clint Eastwood AND nazi castle AND fight atop a cable car!

Sands of Iwo Jima: John Wayne as Sgt Stryker, enough said!

Dirty Dozen: Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, etc., etc, death row inmates vs. nazi's SWEET!

Kelly's Heroes: Clint Eastwood, Donald Sutherland, Don Rickles, and Capt. Stubing of Love Boat fame. Renegades after nazi gold and a Sherman v. "Tiger" duel with "flower children" taking on nazi's. What's not to love?
