I am going to give up modelling guys, I don't have enough time for my online habit! :-)
Seriously, in the last week I have spent more time online checking out the forums at Armorama, Missing-Links, Track Links, etc. than I have spent actually working on models. I am becoming addicted.

Thoughts?

Rob,
I share your pain. I find myself doing the same thing on days. It's either reading online forumns such as those mentioned or I play military related computer games. I am trying to break the habit and am making slow progress.
You won't quit modelling though. I tried twice and realized it just wasn't going to happen. So, enjoy your on-line time and I had better see a completed kit at the next meeting.

I too am spending an inordinate amount of time on the computer reading the same groups and I am also interested in model railroads so I read some of them as well. I also buy every magazine I find about modeling and read them as well. I thought I had given up modeling years ago, kept looking and reading. It is in your blood, you can't get away from it.

I agree!...I spend many hours dreming about finishing that project thats spilt out all over my work bench and talking about the little details and finding out what other people do. But once I have seen what other people do it inspires me in a way. I think..."wow!...that looks really good!...hey I am not that far away form that!...I can do that!...its not that hard!" Then I put my music on and lock myself in the mad lab. 2 3 maby 4 hours later I emerge with paint all over my fingers and drag my parents to show them and brag abit
Rtwpsom2, I think its just a phase...I get them too..."my modeling sucks!...Ill never do that kind of weathering!...look at how bad mine is compared to that guys"
STICK WITH IT!...look at what other people do and think that you can do that too!...its not that hard!...Comon man!...just cos you stay a bit too much!...use it to inspire you!

(hope this helps)

Like Hollowpoint stated....."you are not alone"......

Some months ago I came to the conslusion of stopping too, but then I realized.......There's nothing wrong with how I do it....... This hobby, the Armorama site, the actual building are supposed to give me pleasure...... and it does, so why not enjoy it...!

I like the actual building as much as enjoying the creations made by others on the internet.... .

I feel you pain Rob. Just hop in once in a while, or just accept the fact that you have an addiction....

Welcome to the AA (Anonimous Armoramics) Let's say it all out loud now.....I am addicted

Give up surfing?!?

Never! I figure when I look at posts of somebody elses model on this site, I feel like I contributed a bit to that kit being built.

C'mon its sounds plausible doesn't it???

Darn, didn't think so (as I look over my shoulder to my modeller's closet and 40 unbuilt kits)...

Sigh

Never Give up!!
I too find myself surfing quite a bit. It's become my version of research AND inspiration. I do try to limit my time on the weekends (on line) so I can focus on building.
I have to admit - I love having unlimited fast access during work. I leave armorama up ALL Day long and quickly check posts all day. That way when I get home I can focus on building.

Don't think I'd get 1/2 as much done if I couldn't surf during the day.

Never Give up Plastic - just extend deadlines!

I know what you mean, Rob. The problem I find is that the more time I spend reading responses and asking for help here at Armorama, the better my models are looking. I mean, there is a notable difference between my "pre-Armorama" work, and now.

Everyone here shares responsibility for my improvement, and I collectively say, Thanks. Since I want to continue to improve, it's hard to hit the disconnect switch, even if it does cut into my modeling time.

I consider it a choice of quality over quantity....not that it stops me from adding to my stash

Mike

Now, of course I have no intention of giving up either the internet or modelling, but
I had quite a start when I realized I had not really done anything this week on the Hellcat. I resolved that last night. I scratch built some stowage boxes for the turret, plumbed the hydraulics, and re-did the mounts for the radio. I feel much better now.

I am fairly new to building models.. I took up the hobby 1 year ago, it was something I always wanted to do but could never afford to do "well" anyways now that I've started i've built some nice stuff and the forums here and on the newsgroups and the articles I find online help me in my hobby and since I enjoy looking up the stuff on the internet and feeling I am part of a community of fellow modelers out there I get more enjoyment out of the hobby and feel that it all is part of the whole.

In my book modeling is 1/3 reading about the hobby and research 1/3 building and 1/3 thinking about how I can do this better.

besides old foggys like me (i'm 34) have to take breaks every so often from building to rest our hands and eyes and what better way to do so than to read up on whats going on in the community.

and every now and then ramble on like this.

I look at it this way:
Before I found ArmoramA, I built Tamiya car kits with spray cans and tube glue. I had no more that 4 unbuilt kits at one time. I had very little knowledge of World War II.
After I found Armorama: I build anything from World War II using liquid cement (super glue, white glue, etc.) and an airbrush. I now have a stack of 35+ unbuilt kits. I now have a greater knowledge of World War II, and respect for those brave men who fought for freedom.
Even if my production has dropped, my modelbuilding experince is better because of ArmoramA.

I need the forum! It gives me time to rest the, not so young eyes, and clear the glue fumes from my head.It also gives a great perspective on the hobby. We are all experiencing the same challenges/problems,working on the same projects. Ask for help.Watch the replies pour in.It's a great bunch of people in this pursuit.JOCK

I have the following hobbies that i put at least 3 hours to a week:
Football
Lacrosse
marksmanship
models
Being on the web is included in that time if I'm in those sites that are on the above listed hobbies.
P.S. I'm only on the computer for about an hour a night.
Hobbies are for you're enjoyment.
Doesn't matter what that hobby is :-)

In the words of a famous President (who was also a blatant liar, coward, and pathetic father figure!) "I feel yur pain"

I actually think that Roadkill has his the nail on the head, we are all in need of a 12-Step withdrawel and support program for Armorama-Aholics... the only problem is, the cure is also the symptom... ya gotta log on to find out what you have to do to resist the urge to log on... and of course, while your there, you might as well read a few articles, and drop a few posts...

Hmmm, interesting. However, I think I would view surfing the net for modelling info and model building as complimentary to each other. I too prowl most of my internet time on forums such as this and others. The discussions on the forums (such as in one where they're talking about a NATO-WP conflict) stimulate my interest in building kits that have a bearing with these (e.g. say a German Wiesel in a NATO exercise).
Rob, keep the faith! :-)

To me also, surfing the web for any kind of reference material is model related and since my puter is there at my workbench, it's there for easy access...

The Yoda is right! I took a second computer down stairs and have it on Armorama. My Wife continues to believe the computer is on too much and I must be watching some porn given all the "Ohhhs and Ahhhs" emitting from my work bench. The people who participate in this forum are fantastic craftsmen. They set a high mark for all of us to strive towards....
