Our 16 year old Jessie suddenly developed untreatable complications from undiagnosed growths on many of her organs on Monday and we had to say good-bye yesterday to our great little friend.
Here she is in her flight jacket 3 years ago (which always made her walk a little prouder!) and her last night with us on Tuesday.
She will always be missed.

Oh, I am so sorry. The loss of a pet is really the loss of a really good friend, or even a family member. Please accept my condolances.

Sorry for your loss Al. I had to have two dogs put down this year, Elway, who we had for four years, and Copper, who we had for nine years and lasted until he was about 17. Both were "pound hounds" but I think that's the best kind.

I highly recommend getting a replacement right away. We knew Copper couldn't last so we got a puppy a month or two before he had to go. It helped a lot with the grief.

Thanks, frinds, for the support.

You're so right about that. Jessie was found roaming the streets of a small town near us and was probably 3 when we got her. How she survived any time is beyond me. In her younger days, she would bark and strain at the leash most aggressively at Harley's and big trucks.

Last night, my wife was on Petfinder.com and she volunteers each Saturday at the SPCA, so I expect Benny the Bichon (who came from that volunteering effort) will have a new friend very soon.

Let me add my condoleances. You have 16 years of fond memories in which I'm sure you made her as happy as she made you. You can never replace her but you can find another unique personality, which in time will endear you just as much. The new dog you find will indeed be a lucky one.
The best to you and your family,
Charles

Al, I'm sorry to hear of your loss. Anyone who has had a pet knows they are part of your family and when you lose one, it is deeply felt.

We've got a cat that is getting on in years and in additon to having developed feline diabetes which requires insulin shots twice daily, has led to some significant decreased muscle strength in his rear legs slowing him down quite a bit. Funny thing about the shots. Rather than avoiding them as you might think (they're administered in the scruff of the neck), as soon as he's been fed he comes to one of us for the shot, so he must realize it makes him feel better.

Having faced the inevitable decison with previous pets, I know that it won't be to long before I'll have to make the same decision. It will be heartbreaking but as has been said it is an act of love.

Thanks, Tom (and everyone) for the kind words. They're a comfort.
I konw exactly what you mean, Tom. One of our first two cats, Moonshadow, was diabetic and required a shot each day (I guess that was good training for my own shots 20 years later :-) ) And, he, too, seemed to enjoy the attention it got him.

I'm deeply saddened for your loss,Al.At least the suffering of your buddy is over.I write this with my 12 year old Sadie at my feet.Found her eating out of the back door of A&W drive-in in Jackson,CA and has been "Daddie's Girl" ever since.
Good luck
