Some of you probably have already tried this but I'm finding it a little addictive and free.
Use the Google search engine and search for google earth.
It's brilliant. Sattelite photos of the whole world. A lot of area is Hi-res. You can find your house if you want. Find warships, aircraft even tanks!

It is very good, been exploring it for awhile now, somebody posted it a few weeks ago. For us Brit users go to the Google page and in the line of links find 'Go to Google.com', then 'more..' at the top, and look for Google Earth, it's a small programme download and well worth it!

Hi Tom!

I heard about that program too and wanted to give it a try but it is only for PC and not for Mac... Doh! On the Google site they said they worked on it but I can't wait to test it... I wonder if I can see my house here in my little town called Loupershouse.

Over on another site I hang out at a number of people have used it to spot historical museum ships, like USS Missouri and such. It's really kind of scary what they can see from space. For some reason my address is a few houses off from where it really is, but only I'd know that.

well it didn't recognise my street name and i found the images rather blurry. I was expecting alot more detail, like being able too see cars and other items but it was a good laugh, cheers.

LOL James!

You should take comfort - that probably means the original bods behind the scenes didn't see your neck of the woods as a potential target!

Ohh me of little faith...

There are certain areas of very high definition. I think it's an on-going project. Ground Zero is high definition, and very moving when I found it.

This is cool, I was able to find my house.

42* 51'14.33"n 78*40'32.51"w

The * means degree, should be a little "o" in place of the *

Should be dead center in screen, white truck in front belonging to the neighbors.

Edit: Isn't there a way of capturing a on-line screen shot.

I have it as well and find it pretty interesting.

One of the most interesting things I’ve seen on it

21 21'52.31"N, 157 57'33.24"W / Fords Island at Pearl Harbor.

Just to the East you will find an Iowa class battleship and at Arizona memorial.
To the North West is the sunken Oklahoma ( I think that’s that’s the right ship.)

My home can be found here 40 9'20.86"N, 79 2'40.58"W
You cant make it out. Just prof at how far out in the middle of nowhere it really is.

There's another sunken ship visible at Pearl harbour, just to the north east of the USS Misourri. It has some sort of structure over it, maybe so people can go closer to it. I think it's either the Tennessee, West Virginia, Vestal, or Arizona.

Redneck, the I believe the sunken ship you mentioned is the USS Raleigh.

Thanks Dave. I looked into it after posting and the Oklahoma was raised in 1943. my mistake.

The other ship your talking about is the Arizona and the thing on top of it is the Arizona memorial.
That one I know.

There is an even simpler way. Under file, there should be thing that says "save image"...explaination enough.

Personally I love the program, not just for personal use (found the houses of all the guys on my dorm floor and scored a few points there ), but also for classes, particularly Geography classes. Also, since I am a History major, now I can look up where the heck the place any given professor is talking about.

There is also some inherent controversey that is coming with this program. At least the US military is expressing concern with Google Earth because of the nature of the program of satelitte images of EVERYTHING, including US bases, home and abroad. There is also a feature in the free version that allow - fairly accurately - to measure distances...artillery guys, you do the math...

i downloaded it last month..this is cool features although i read somewhere that some countries didnt like this idea
good to see that u all can view your area in high resolution images.
However, some country doenst have high resolution images support (as in my case)..so i cant view my area with high resolution zoom in images.... long distance images are good.....
but i can see other country very good

for those who never try this, pls have a try and u would love it..
just be cautious that this software running on hi end platform and system.... meaning to say , u must have fast processor, good graphic accelerator, and good connection speed as well to enjoy the program... a friend of mine was using some old machine and complaint that this programme was making him waste his time and was really pissed about it...

enjoy!!

I actually forgot to mention this, it would appear that much of the program is tailored for the US (Google is a US company). It seems the best images are taken of the US with most major cities outside of the US having pretty good images. Since the program is streaming and found from public sources (ie can be updated) I would think that the images will be updated as they find them.

I found the images of Moscow and Berlin rather interesting. It was cool to take a map of Berlin in 1944-45 and look for the Zoo Flak Towers locations and try to locate some of the other notable locations. There is a stark contrast of what was East Berlin and West Berlin. I can now see (better) why there was much concern over the infrastructure and the costs to rebuild it. Munich...Wow, I can't believe how much it has grown since 1985-86. I was lost. The only places I could really recognize was the Bahnhof, Olympic Park, and the airport.

Down loaded the program, ran it, found my house and am wondering why my best friends car is in my drive way at 2:30 in the afternoon. Just kidding. Actually though their is a little red sports car in my drive way . My wifes old convertable. Sold it 3 or 4 years ago. No deck in the back yard either. So the picture I'm seeing is at least 3 years old.
