#1- Blackhawk Down...seemed like it was pretty true to the book (OK- I know there were a few exceptions) but it didn't "go for the glory". Just a down and dirty, very moving film. People died, they hurt, it sucked and they rose above it all to do their jobs!! A very moving movie to me.

After #1 it is hard to give hard numbers, but Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, Battle of Britain, Longest Day and Bridge Too Far all are right up there! Zulu also...Hamburger Hill, Full Metal Jacket as well...

I am impressed by the "grit" as well as the historical accuracy of movies. All of you are right regarding the "skylining" in SPR, but it is after all a movie, cinematography does enter into the equation. Tactically wrong? Yes. A movie wrecker? No IMHO.

There are others, just not coming to mind at this moment.

well... just to rattle off a few of my favourite war movies (in no particular order):
Saving Private Ryan, Platoon, Band of Brothers, Full Metal Jacket, Enemy at The Gates, Where Eagles Dare, Rambo II/ III(?), The Longest Day and Bukit Kepong.

Plenty of good movies listed here. The first movie that came to my mind when I read the topic was Das Boot. I guess I'll have to go with that. I reserve the right to change my choice of favorite depending on what I am modeling, gaming or reading about at the time though.

I may get clobbered for this, but I really enjoy Braveheart everytime I see it. I know nothing about the depicted history, but the battle scenes are amazing.

Of course I must also give the nod to Saving Private Ryan, Hamburger Hill, and Cross of Iron.

I've never seen Das Boot, but hopefully will get a chance to one day.

Geeeez...I forgot Braveheart! One of my all time favorites. I don't generally put it in the "war" movie category. And no I don't know why I don't...

I don't know if it historically accurate, but it IS a great story, very moving and inspiring! It is in my all movie top 5, maybe at the Number 1 spot.

Think I would have to go for 'Apocalypse Now', though not necessarily for authenticity Just a brilliant cinematic experience.

I also liked 'Cross of Iron', though whatever you do, avoid the follow-up 'Breakthrough' which features Richard Burton (for James Coburn) in a 70s British DPM camouflage jacket and goes downhill from there....

BTW1 the unit in They were not divided' is supposed to be 2 Armoured Welsh Guards, which was the only tank unit in Guards Armoured not to have the Sherman, unlike in the film...

BTW2 the Vietnam part of 'Forrest Gump' is better than 'Platoon'. If you want a Vietnam film with a difference, try 'The odd angry shot' about the Australian SAS. In one scene someone actually selects single shot on his M16 - remarkable

Gallipoli, Zulu, Private Ryan & We Were Soldiers. Also worth a mention is Apocalypse Now, Alamo (new version) and Band of Brothers (o.k. it's not a movie, but..)

Turkeys. Patton, U571 and the Turkey to beat all, Thin Red Line...Jim

I've seen this movie for 3/4, its looks great really.
It is not bargain!
It is really a movie you must see!

Nice shots but sometimes a little dark, This movie you must see in a dark room other then that you don't see it anymore.

Great movie for what I saw!

Nothing wrong with Braveheart, it's a great flick. Accurate no but entertaining, absolutely!

You have NOT seen Das Boot? Hey, how the heck did he get in here without having seen Das Boot? I thought that was part of the Armorama entrance test! lol

Do yourself a favor, rent or buy the Directors Cut and when you have a complete afternoon to yourself, sit down and just watch it. I didn't list it in my favorites because IMO, it goes without saying that it's a classic.

Odd Angry Shot is a great one, haven't seen that one in years though. Have to see if I can find it anywhere around here.

Very well done.

Directed by Peckinpaw.

We have it available here at the public library, I enjoy checking it out now and then.

Another good one: History Channel's
"The Lost Batallion"

Tom

Good call! Lost Batallion was a solid flick, was that Hictory Channel or A&E?

Well I finished the movie the battle scenes were awesome. Especially the chinese scene. However I had it dubbed in english, I never knew Koreans had a Mexican accent :-) .
The movie didnt have a sense of realism to it in a way, like when they would have a 10 minute conversation and the enemy is 2 feet behind them. It was still a fun movie to watch.
Oh yea alotta drama for a war film, but its all good.
