Here's is something I wipped up yesterday. It's about 1/16 scale made with Evergreen Plastics. Painted flat black then drybrushed with MM's gunmetal. Needs a tripod, but not sure what i'm doing with it. Maybe i'll build a Huey side and door with mount?..

Fantastic piece of scratchbuilding.
I saw these images in the recent posts in the gallery and had to come find the thread to let you know this is great!

That looks sweet, Joe.

What are you going to do with it for real? I don't think they hung Ma Duece out the side of a Huey -- that was more M60 territory.

Thanks Guys..Well I decided to go with the Huey (UH-1D) door opening while going through some of the Huey books. Here is the start on the Co-pilot side.

Hey Bob (Hollopoint) they sure did, not many. The one i'm modeling from is a UH-1D "Peacemaker" Was a chase ship from 3/4 Cav. They retrieved shot-down aircrew.

Some of the "B" models where even fitted with the .50's

Joe,
You can see the ejection port on the M2 HB in the forground below. It is the slot on the bottom just behind where the side feed port is.

(.22 cal replica, but same as on the full sized version.)

Also, the links and empty shell casings eject out the bottom, as seen below. The port on both sides of the receiver are actually both feed ports for modifications to allow either right or left feed, with left being standard.

As mother said, they were used on Huey's. I most talk I heard of .50s on Hueys came mainly from the Navy's Seawolves though other units did it too.

Here are a couple from a 101 Aviation, 101st Airborne Huey

All the above images are Googled, coming from A Co, 101 Aviation, 101st ABN DIV's veteran website. The aircraft is a UH-1D SN#64-13521. The images were provided to the website by Norman Vandal.

By the way, nice .50 mother. Can't wait to see it with a 1/16! Huey, even if its just the cargo area.

Remember this Vietnam site I posted a while back? ‘A view through the lens’.

Has quite a bit of info on the .50cal door gunner’s mount.

Just a very small point of clarification the links actually are ejected out the side of the feed tray opposite the side the rounds are fed through.. The .50 can be set up to feed from either side depending on its role. The rounds do eject out the ejection port on the bottom of the Reciever group. I have my manuals somewhere and if I can find them I will scan a pic of the ejection port. HTH

Well. Im gonna jump in here too boys..Modern 50 cal Ammo cans hold 100 Rounds. WW2 cans typicaly held 105 rounds. Only very early ww2 ammo boxes had 50 round boxes. HTH
Cheers,
Bryan

I will add that there could be larger boxes if used in a aircraft.

That's a great piece of work there. I wish I had the talent and the patience to do something that good.
