I love sci-fi. There has been some really great stuff and some really hokey stuff. Anyway rules are...TV only so Star Wars is out (not that it was ever in IMHO).
My choice is Babylon 5. It was not a show made up of little viginetts as most of the Star Trek series. It was a show that chronicled 5 years. You had to watch it constantly or you missed something. The guy that wrote and produced the show had stuff that was in the first year that led to stuff that happened in the fitfh year...a pure writing genious. The story line was unbelievably complex, the characters diverse and three dimensional, and for those who are more visual then character oriented there was plenty of "shoot 'em up...bang...bang" stuff as well. The show was one of the first that use the new compter graphics generated stuff that have become commonplace in films and TV today.
Now mind you, I love Star Trek especially the very first ones and shows like the Twilight Zone and Outer Limits are fantastic. As a kid I grew up with Will Robinson and marveled at the guys trapzing through the Time Tunnel.
So what is your choice? Please tell me why as well.

I have to go along with blaster on this one and vote for Babylon 5. The storytelling on that show was outstanding for any dramatic series (let alone sci-fi programming), the characters were well developed and believeable, the fx were excellent, and the real science behind the show wasn't too bad either.
I'm a big sci-fi nut (some would say a big nut in general, but that's neither here nor there), and of all the series I've enjoyed, I think B5 is the best.

I love the original Battlestar Galactia. Just couldn't get into the new sci fi shows.

I know I'm dealing with younger guys here. :-)
While not every episode qualified as "Sci-Fi" enough were clearly in that field for my vote goes to "The Twilight Zone". Some of the best actors and writers of that generation were involved inthat show.

The Twilight Zone. This show was so far ahead of its time, it's scary. You never know what famous actor/actress you are going to see. And many of the plots were downright prophetic

I am surprised no one picked Space: Above and Beyond. Thought Sliders might pick up a vote as well that sure was a unique idea. Doctor Who is the only one I never watched regularly. It was British and not easy to find... not that I was really looking. Read a couple of comics of it in the early 60's though.

I believe that for me it’s a "flavour of the month" type of thing. I really enjoyed Star Trek, firstly TOS, then TNG, then Voyager and finally Enterprise. Add to that Sliders, Quantum leap, V (Anyone remember V?), Earth final conflict etc…
Right now it’s Stargate SG1!

For me it would have to be Doctor Who, since I grew up with it. And Peter Davidson was definitely not the worst Doctor either!
Liked Dark Skies, specially the mad way that real people were thrown into the stories. Like searching a Soviet missile silo with a young Colin Powell, or the film student with a cine camera - why it's Jim Morrison! and Charlie Manson too.
And also Farscape.

Hey Al, you're not THAT old! :-) :-)
Anyway, in order of preference of recent shows, I liked (seems that everything I like gets canceled
)
Farscape
Space: Above and Beyond (SMT just announced a new 1/48 Hammerhead!!)
Babylon 5
and even though the shows themselves were cheesy, I loved the ship designs in Space: 1999, Buck Rodgers and Battlestar Galactica.

I REALLY want to say Twilight Zone, since I consider it one of the greatest TV series of all time. I just don't really consider it Sci Fi, it's more fantasy, since it never really explains how such things happen.
For greatest Sci Fi I have to go with the original Star Trek. It was the first, at least it was the first I remember, and the one that started it for all the rest. It wasn't always perfect, there were some real turkeys in the episodes, but over all I loved it.

Hi
My vote goes to Space 1999. Moonebase Alpha ruled when I was a kid.
A Danish tv station had a rerun of this classic tv-series, a year ago. I watched one episode and left it at that. It wasn't as good as it was in the 70's.

Tie: Stargate SG-1 and The X-Files
Stargate SG-1 is in its last year of production, so I might have a winner in my mind when it wraps up.
The X Files - by far - just defined its type of science-fiction/conspiracy theory format like no other series did with their own. It became pop culture faster and inspired dissenters and supporters who endlessly debated its twists and turns - whether or not they actually 'knew' what they were talking about.
And, it transcended the definition of "science-fiction" over its run into the drama side of things. That's damn good for actors without the acting background like the classic Trek cast and the wonderful actors cast into the B-5 saga.
The same goes for SG-1, it that it defined its universe so clearly, but approachably, the viewers and fans slipped easily into the episodes every week, every year. And - it is probably the most successful small-screen adaptation of a movie story ever. Regarded as even better. I loved Planet of the Apes, but the TV adaptation was less-inspired to be kind. It could never be mentioned in the same breath as SG-1...

All in agreement with the 'Gunmeister' ala X files, & was actually drawn into SG-1 by SWMBO :-)8 .
However, you folks have GOT to check out "Firefly" by Joss Whedon (Same guy who produced 'Buffy' & 'Angel'). It absolutely blows away everything previously listed, for all the same reasons given. The best show that nobody watched...[sigh]
(Oh yeah, gotta give props to the Dr. & Red Dwarf)
Anybody else enjoy the "Hitchhiker's Guide" adaptations?
