hmmmm.......hang on. You better be banned from most of the info here as each individual poster owns the copyright for, or is in breach of copyright posting the info they do.

So if it is for reference only and not being used commercially why not help your mates if they ask. After all one day one of them (us) may have something you want

Ciao IanSadler,
I have to confess that I have no idea of what you are talking about. I promise not to ask you to copy anything, but I do have a question.....Could you trace something for me? :-) :-)
I'm kidding. If anyone needs a copy of a reference, I can try to help out.
Ciao for now

"Copyright infringements" are one of the biggest issues on the internet and one of the biggest misunderstood. Copyrights are in place to protect the intellectual property of a person so another person cannot gain financially off of their work.

Copyright infringements come into play when a copyrighted article, picture, writing, idea, etc. is used without permission for a commercial purpose or in using to generate revenue / turn a profit.

Under your definition, if I download an image off of Guntruck's web site (example) to better help me build / detail a model, then that would be copyright infringement, when in reality it is not. I have not benefited financially or have taken credit for work which is not mine.

If this site charged an admission, dues, etc. then copyright infringement becomes a very big issue. If you copy something and then sell it to a fellow member, then copyright infringement is an issue.

If I go to your house to visit, and you show me a picture in a book that I use to better or reference a model I am building, that is not copyright infringement. Same thing appies if you make a copy of a pic or take a quote from the book, not an infringement.

In this scenario, all of the pics of new models coming out, pics of books coming out, references to existing model cover art, models themselves, etc. would be copyright infringement all over this site. I know that when someone posts a pic of a new model coming out that they do not always (if ever) get the expressed written permission from the model company and the owner of the cover art.

Disclaimer: This is the opinion given to me by a lawyer friend of mine specifically relating to this post. FYI Copyright laws confuse the hell out of me as well !!!

So if you made a dio of a pic you seen in a book would that class as a breach of copyright? what if you later sold it to some one what then? as I'll bet there are a load of models ect copied from books ect

Ciao Matt,
Not necessarily. When you place a picture on the web, technically you are "publishing" it. This would require the permission of the owner. But, as StarTraveler had written, lots of people do this with box art of a model (and the reason that the company nevers causes trouble is because they are receiving "free" publicity.)
Ciao for now

From what I understand it makes no diference whether or not any profit is made. For one thing by copying someone's work and distributing it for free you may be hurting the commercial value of that person's work.
The fact that no money is being made may be taken into consideration when a court awards damages for breach of copyright.
Copying other people's work is allowable under "Fair Use" if it is used as part of a review or critique of their work. So putting pictures into a model review is fine if they are to illustrate comments in the text of the review.

Well, after reading the article Ian did on the DUKW (because i'm in the middle of one meself) and i must say it has been quite helpful...but, in reading the ending note from I an on the article , I have have q question about his use of copyrighted materials....

Quoted Text

I am indebted to Phil Stevens from Birmingham IPMS club for the loan of the last book listed as this one book proved to be the most valuable in tying all the details together. And above all making sense of all the notes I had made from the other books. It proves once more the benefit of belonging to a club, Cheers Phil.

A final note on the books used in this research project, in some cases there is only a single photograph in the whole book, but as they say one photograph is worth a thousand words and on more than one occasion this has proved to be true. Each in its own way adds to the total project and helps to clarify details.

As more information comes available I will be adding to these notes. So if you have any information about alterations to the DUKW series please feel free to either add them or contact me with your information.

Ian Sadler

?

I mean, I get what he's been ranting on about concerning photcopyied articles and sending them to people, but isn't that just another way to "loan" a book to a friend?

Come on Ian, this ain't Napster and yer not Lars.

And if your "loaning" materials to people has gotton out of hand, then why on earth did you start?

BTW, could you please reload your gallery images so I can finish DLing your images to my hard drive?

Thanks Bud and cheers Mate,

Kevin

Would it help any if I were to apologize? I know how to do so in a couple of languages and since I an unworthy of attention from my betters, I can do so at an moment's notice. I have nothing to do with the topic whatsoever, but I can grovel if the need arises.
