My favourite tanks of world war 2, based on look rather than performance are ;

German - Jagdpanther
British/Canadian - Achilles
American - Sherman DD
Russian - IS 152

I was wondering what everyone else's favourites were, based on look, and not performance.

how did you work that one out?

the panther was designed to fight the T34, taking as many features from it as possible. the T34 was an improvement of the BT7, which was copied from the US christie series tanks.

plus post war western tanks are largely based on the pershing and centurion, both of these tanks being designed not just as a reaction to the enemy, but to be the universal tank, drawing on the failings of the sherman and cruiser tanks.

cheers

German Of course, my love for the tiger and all its variants, like the Elefant, and I also like the panther and the Pz. IV.

for the Americans I don't like any of them

The british I like the firefly

for the russians I like the T-34 and the KV's

I have to agree with you that BT-7 was pretty much the American Christie tank but the T-34 is a completly different tank, not merely a modernization. The T-34 was the best tank of WWII and served as an example to most if not all later tanks.

paul,

the T34 was designed around the BT7 design, it was not a completely new one. it was impossible to fit the 76.2mm gun on a BT7, so a new turret, hull to mount it on, and more powerful engine was needed. the soviets tried to keep as many components from the BT7 as possible, and althought it may appear to be a completely different design, it is more of an incredibly extensive update.

the western allies had very little knowlege of the T34 design when the centurion and pershing tanks were being designed, and most modern western designs originate from these tanks.

however the T34 has been the basis of all soviet post war designs, which are very influencial in their own right.

the T34 was the motivation behind most late war german designs, but how many features of those have been copied in post war tanks? underpowered unreliable engines and mechanical components, overly complicated suspension systems etc?

cheers

joe
