Hi John,
I believe that tamiya paints can be thinned with Isopropynol (Isopropyl Alcohol). This used to be sold in chemists (rubbing alcohol) but I'm not sure that it is now. 3m sell it as "surface Cleaner". It is still expensive, but not nearly as expensive as buying thinners in a small jar.

As Mal says use Iso-propanol. This is what Sam and I use and never have any issues.

We get ours from evil Bay inc postage for less than the Tamiya Thinners or Mr Hobby stuff

Link to eBay item

Hope this helps
