The upper hull is all styrene, including the front and rear plates. Engine deck vents are carefully carved and thinned parts from the Italieri Panther:

As a larger scale (1:350 and up) ship modeler, and despite the glorious renaissance in new releases in 1:350, I still scratch build many of my projects. On the ways for this year alone are:

--HMS Audacious
--HMS Liverpool (1914)
--Two Fury-type British destroyers
--DKM Altmark
--HMS Glorious (1940)
--Taiho
--USS West Virginia (1942)
--HMS Dreadnought (1915)
--HMS Temeraire (1915)
--HMS Good Hope
--HMS Monmouth (1914)

Got mine finished the end of January. Probably the only major scratchbuilding I'll be doing this year.

Hello, David:

Unique looking build, is there anyway that you would tell me where to obtain a set of drawings for that afv? I would like to try my hand at it.

Not really that impressive compared with some of the full scratchprojects listed here but I did detail the Engine bay of the Bronco Hotchkiss H39 and am currently working on detailin the Crew compartiment and the turret.

I'm pretty new to scratchbuilding, but I'd like to modify a King Tiger turret into a post July 1945 one, and I need to make a ring with drive teeth for the E-50 and E-75 idlers (were supposed to be rear driven, but the Trumpeter kits don't have the teeth). And if time and skills allow: a Jagd E-75.

For modifying the KT turret, how should I proceed? I need to lenghten the straight part in the roof top which also means the front plate will be in a steeper angle. Do I cut the turret apart in different pieces? Do I totally remake the sides or do I twist and bend the original and use filler to modify?

Thanks!

I pretty much tinker with, add on, and sometimes pretty extensively scratch-mod about every kit I open (save for the one DML flakpanzer I I am trying manfully to keep strictly OOTB... ).

Here is a recently-completed Trumpeter E-10- there is a lot of scratch on it - the mesh schurzen and racks, the top deck has lots of mods (cupola and deck, rebuilt Tamiya IR device, scratch rundumfeuer MG mount, anti-shrapnel armour, re-done opened louver system for engine air, cleaning rod assembly and mount, wood pole antenna, etc.), and the entire rear-end is mod with scratch exhaust system, "jeep" rack (really works! ) and armour deck w/ jack over exhaust system.

I'm too cheap - so do it all with styrene and coke-can bits, etc.

PS: There are a few more pics of this project on my pics in the kit-maker photos, if you wish to see some more?

Bob

Thanks for the kind words!

It was a lot of fun, and the more so as it has won several show prizes even as a few judges (and some other model-police types and less-mellow modellers) just seem to HATE it! And, hey! Sometimes, a little challenge and in-your-eye can be fun!

Hi everyone,
I do not know if this is consider scratch building as most everyone seems to be working on models or add ons.
I am currently working on building a 1/35 scale bell tower out of miniature bricks. It is going to huge.I will then be connecting it to a existing church that I have.I will put up some pics in the near future.

Mike:

Bell-towers and churches work just fine, by me!

("But... You HAVE made each a those little bricks outta proper mud and fired them for effect, haven't you? No cheatin' with any of that pre-cast foam "brick-wall" stuff, right? And maker's marks count, too!")

Just Funnin' there, Pardner! Build away!

Steve, all:

Here are a few more pics of my E-10 build. Also see some pics on my photos page on kitmaker? The pics here "emphasize" some of the scratch built on this kit- of note are the schurzen (wedding veil and styrene sheet and sprue bits for bolts and rivets and alum tubes for the pipes), the rear rack and exhaust system and rear armour deck, the anti-air armour, the MG rundumfeuer (MG is a Dragon gun with some work), the IR device (re-work around a Tamiya item), the cupola and deck (ancient Tamiya StuG III cupola reworked), and tool mounts and hull details and tow-rope. The barrel is an RB item.

Hey Bob-
I appreciate your posting these. This is a nice piece of work.

I have no criticism what-so-ever- because I wouldn't change a thing. You made an E-10 look like a plausible combat veteran vehicle with a lot of cool- well thought out details.

I really hope that you are looking at Trumpeters E-50 and 75 and thinking "What-If" again.

Steve;

Glad you liked it! It's actually pretty neat as a concept vehicle, and it lent itself well to doing various things. I've enjoyed it as being my first real full-bore build in about 40 years!

Just picked up an E-25. Have a few tweaks I'm dreaming of for it- maybe mod that little turret and build in a side-mount MG151 rig and an IR device, do some exhaust stuff, and look at some schurzen mods and maybe a spare tire and stuff. There's lots of possibilities! I really like the smaller machines.

I am thinking of eventually trying out the E-75.. after I see and hear what folks think of the kit. But there's so so much plastic out there, and in my stash
