My vote would be for Das Boot. It really looked like they put quite a bit of research into the movie and tried to get it right. I think that as far as the combat scenes go (historically there is a lot of doubt about the storyline) Braveheart did a good job showing just how brutal those weapons were that they used back then.

Off the topic, I wanted to give everyone a reminder that Mail Call starts their new shows this Sunday..............................

My vote would have to be for Gettysburg, after you throw out all that Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain yak that didn't happen, it portrays an accurate film. I reinacted for years and 90% of those guys were reinactors, not paid extras or stunt doubles. Talk about some serious dudes. You go to an encampment, you go period though we did have a wooden cask put around an igloo for cold beer after drilling or a hard fight against the Yankee hordes.

Saving Private Ryan

My uncle, who passed away about five years ago was a Marine Combat Engineer during WWII. He served in some bloody campaigns - including Tarawa and Iwo Jima. From what he described it sounds very similar (especially the beach assault) to the movie "Saving Private Ryan"

My uncle survived the war partly because of luck but also because, I believe, he was a courageous and alert individual.

PS. He met up with my other uncle, his kid brother, while they were fighting on Iwo Jima.

Saving Private Ryan by far. Most of the others, someone gets hit, little red mark and he falls. This movie has no pretty wounds.

Surprised only one other mention for "Battleground". This was movie made in '46 about the 101 at the Bulge.

I am surprise about the number of mentions for Enemy at the Gates. I just saw it and thought it was awful (aside from the boinking scene with Rachel Weiscz).

Personally I love that movie To me the way it showed how the Russian political officers fired on their own troops was very realistic I don't think a lot of people knew they did that before they saw that movie

This is easy. Saving Private Ryan. Most of the movies here would get my nod for being very realistic... perceptually. But SPR did something (for me) that most movies do not, it moved me from merely being a spectator, to actually feeling like a participant. That too me is ulitimate realism.

In my personal order of Realism

Band of Brothers - what can I say - the greatest portrayal of WWII ever made.
Saving Private Ryan - Greatest WWII movie - wish it included all the footage Spielberg left of the cutting room floor
Blackhawk Down - why Rangers and Airborne are some of the best in the world
Gladiator - Opening battle scene awesome
Tora Tora Tora - Realistic portrayal of the Attack on Pearl Harbor
Enemies at The Gate - The Russian war was hell.
Gettysburg - Epic in scope
Glory - Nobility in the face of Death
A Bridge Too Far - Demonstrates really why Monte was overrated
The Patriot - Mel Gibson vs. The Brits
The Alamo - John Wayne as Davey Crockett vs Santa Ana
***********************
OK now don't bust my chops -
Pearl Harbor - Cut out the goofey love triangle and watch the Battle of Britan footage, the attack on Pearl Harbor (the Arizona explosion is amazing) and the Doolittle Raid. With DVD its easy to cut to these scenes.

HOW ABOUT LORD OF THE RINGS????
The Fellowship of the Rings and The Two Towers - There's enough red bloody war and head slicing to make any man proud!

Pearl Harbor - ...the Doolittle Raid.

That was one of the worst parts of that film for me due to the artistic license they took with what really happened.

Agree w/the rest of your picks, though.

Enemy at the Gates as realistic eastern front war movie...

What is everyone's opinion on "Cross of Iron" -- Sam Peckinpagh Dir., Max Schell and Jimmy Coburn. I thought the Russian human wave battle scenes were pretty gritty and real.

One of the worst parts?? How could you tell the whole movie was History by Disney! They didn't even bother to have the ships where they were supposed to be! All in all it must be one of the worst ever made! So if we ever have a thread of the worst war movie ever made Disneys Warped Version of History "Pearl Harbor " (put it in Quotes as it had nothing to do with the real thing!) will get my vote!
Cheers

Have to go for the Cross of Iron.
I hate the current trend of making "spectacular-looking" battle scenes that make absolutely no sense at all (Pearl Harbor, Enemy at the Gates). CGI graphics may look nice but it´s no use if the realism is stretched too far. Ju 88´s bombing Stalingrad from the height of the rooftops...yeah right. Two snipers "duelling" western-style like they were the only two men in the war, having romantic scenes with fellow sniper girl during the battle...yeah right.

I have to go with :
1. We were Soldiers
2. Band of Brothers
3. Hamburger Hill. (This one is very close, I was in country during the time period with the 25th)
4. Enemy at the Gates
5. Saving Private Ryan

I don't know about most realistic but I really like the movie. I like the early movies that were full of pro American, or in this case pro Allied, gung ho kind of stuff. Movies like Air Force, They Were Expendable, Wake Island.

As for Sahara when I got back into modeling I wanted to make models representing things from movies. My first one was the Lulubelle from Sahara. I never really completed the dio for it but here is the model.

hi, I think Saving Private Ryan, Band of Brothers and Das Boot are really close to reality. But I think Black Hawk Down is a kind of Propaganda for war.

Personally, I think the only realistic war movies are the ones made by the guys who got out in the actual battlefields with the bullets and explosions and risked their lives to bring back just a few seconds of footage.
