From what I remember "Enola Gay - The Men, the Mission, the Atomic Bomb" wasn't an action packed movie. It wasn't full of fighter attacks and things like that. I had pretty much forgotten about it until I started thinking about bomber movies after seeing your post.

If you are a history buff, it is interesting to watch how they prepared for the mission and everything.

I remembered seeing this one also. It was pretty far fetched but it was still pretty good. It was definitely more of a sci-fi show. However it did have some good action in it.

Kind of an all-star cast, too.

1. Dambusters (I had to say it.....)
2. 12 O'Clock High
3. 633 Squadron
4. Battle of Britain (excellent scenes from He111 bombers)
5. One of Our Aircraft is Missiing (Wellington)
6. Map of the Human Heart (not for the love story, but the RAF Bomber Command parts - with Lancs!!)
7. Mosquito Squadron
8. Memphis Belle (not historically accurate but good B-17 action)

John, you were right: there's some great footage in The War Lover. Some really crisp, clear footage of B-17s inside and out. Not a bad movie, either.

You could also try Command Decision with Clark Gable. It had a little bit of politics re: politicians be the fault for the U.S. not being prepared for WWII. It is not a bad movie a little like 12 O Clock High.

A little off topic, but there is a book called "Everything But The Flak" written by martin Caidan. It is the story about the reconditioning and ferry of the B17's used in the movie to Europe. Very good but probably out of print now.

Memphis Belle: great cast, you got joker from Full Metal Jacket, and the ball gunner goes on to be a hobbit in the LOTR movies. Coincidence? I think not!

30 Seconds over Tokyo- the only way it could have been better is if Jimmy Stewart was Doolittle. But Tracy did okay.

I gotta go with The Battle of Britain, some great shots from inside the He111 as well as outside. Bob

Some have already mentioned before but ditto to them... "30 seconds over Tokyo" Van Johnson is great! About the Doolittle raid and it's aftermath for American forces. Great flick!

Thanks for the extra suggestions, folks. One of the department stores here in Australia is having a sale on war DVDs, so I'll be dropping in with a list of your recommendations.

No-one mentioned Stairway to the Stars/Johnny in the Clouds (US title) starring John Mills (no relation) and Trevor Howard. Has lots of Bolingbroke/Blenheims and B17's - as well as a pretty young actress making her debut - Jean Simmons.
