In-Box Review
Kitchen Turntable

by: Brent Sauer [ SGTSAUER ]

I have always hated handling my model during the painting and finishing process. There was the constant fear of dropping the model, sticking my fingers in the finish while it was drying, or accidentally moving a decal before it set. Well, one night while shopping at Bed, Bath & Beyond I happened to see this kitchen turntable. Once I laid my eyes on this I knew my time of worry was over. The manufacturer of this 12" turntable is COPCO and it is produced in Taiwan. The retail price is $6.99US which I think is extremely reasonable for the functionality provided.

ITEM DETAILS/CONSTRUCTION
This 12" diameter turntable is constructed with white plastic. The top rotating platform is about 1" tall and is covered with a rubber non-skid surface. The base of the turntable is constructed of the same white plastic as the top and is about 3/8" tall. Attached to the base is the "rotating" mechanism. This mechanism consists of stainless steel ball bearings that rest in a track between the turntable and the base. The quality of construction in my humble opinion is very good. The plastic seems to be very durable and the non-skid surface is well made.

The rotation of the turntable (probably the most important issue) is very smooth and requires little effort. There is absolutely no rocking motion with this turntable. It is an exceptionally stable surface. It will rotate left and rotate right but will not move side to side or back and forth.I don't know if I would recommend painting directly onto the turntable. I intend to cover the non-skid surface with a disposable material such as newspaper or typing/printer paper that has been cut to fit. If you were to paint directly onto the plastic or the non-skid surface, it appears that the surfaces could easily be cleaned with some thinner and a rag.

WHO SAYS SIZE DOESN'T MATTER
I build in three scales mostly. 1/72nd, 1/48th and 1/35th. In the pictures, you see Tamiya's fabulous 1/35th scale T26E3/M26 Pershing perched on the turntable. This rather large tank kit easily fits with room to spare. I anticipate this item will work well for me in all three scales.

APPLICATIONS/USES
I envision the turntable being of use during the following processes:

- Application of photo-etch (when you need both hands to apply the part and realize the model needs to be moved just a little you can rotate it with the palm or heel of your hand)
- Airbrushing
- Drybrushing-Wash application
- Pastel application
- Decal application

I'm sure several of you will come up with other great ideas for its use.

SUMMARY
Overall, I think this thing is a winner. You should be able to find this turntable or others like it at just about any Wal-Mart/K-Mart type store. Some Hardware stores stock items similar to this as well. I believe the turntable would work well for a majority of kits on the market today. Probably the best thing about this tool is that it will be useful for anyone regardless of their ability and will help prevent a lot of finishing mishaps. I hope you find this review useful. Happy Modelling.

About Brent Sauer (sgtsauer)
FROM: MISSOURI, UNITED STATES

I began modelling around the age of 10. My first model kit was the U.S.S. Titanic. As I developed an interest in the military, I started building 1/72nd and 1/48th scale military aircraft. My interest then evolved into some 1/72nd scale armor. The first armor kits I built were 1/72nd scale Hasegawa ...
