In-Box Review
DecoArt Acrylic Paints

by: Keith Magee [ KFMAGEE ]

While I know many within our hobby are loyal to favorite "brand names", here is one you probably haven't heard of but should know more about... DecoArt's line of premium acrylic paints. Sold under a number of sub-brands (DecoArt, Americana, Duncan, Delta), these are high quality /low cost paints that are available in a slew of colors. DecoArt paints are not normally found in most traditional model hobby shops, but are often found in large displays or floor bins at the national Craft Shops like Hobby Lobby, Michael's, and MJDesigns.

Great Price - Fine Results
DecoArt paint is actually marketed for ceramic products, so it is a natural for plaster products by Verlinden, Custom Dioramics, and Plus Model. Because it has an excellent adhesion base, it also works great on the smooth surfaces of resin figures and accessories as well.I still use oils for flesh tones, and Tamiya acrylics for my airbrush work, but there is no hesitation on my part to use DecoArt paints for all my plaster or resin projects, or as a base primer coat on my models. The line delivers a beautiful matte finish, and the high pigmentation and superior batch consistancy allow me to use a wide variety of brushes and techinques.

Save Money - Save Time
As you can see from the link below, the color line is extensive. While you may have a hard time initially dealing with the fact that the perfect Wehrmact Feld Grau color for German WWII uniforms is "DA 98 French Gray Blue", mixed with 20% mix of "DA106 Light Avocado", you will be pleased with the overall results nevertheless. Besides, you can always tell people you custom blend your own color, and this one is "Magee Field Gray"! Heck - make up your own labels!

Characteristics
I find the line works well with any form of brush when working on Cermaic products. For plastics and resin items, i recommend the higer caliber natural hair brushes which will help eleminate any hint of paint lines. As for durability, I have models that are several years old... even infamous color-shift prone color such as white (which yellows) or blues (which often fade) have the exact same tone they did the day after I put them on my shelf. In a word, they are very color-stable paints. As mentioned earlier, the "non-gloss" colors dry within minutes to a full deep flat finish. Cleanup is the standard "soap and water" treatment. The paint is sold in 2 oz. soft-side squeeze tube, and the paint can be thinned with 40% water for use in airbrushing.
