Here's the rack I built this afternoon with a lot of care and a bit of fiddling and tweaking.

The rack is not 100% done yet--I need to add the mesh on the bottom. I'm happy with it, even though a couple of the vertical slats are not perfectly parallel. For the second rack I'm going to tweak the design a bit to incorporate my lessons learned and ease construction. I used Evergreen .06" "L" angle, .015"x.06" strip, and .04"x.06" strip. The mesh I'll pilfer from that supplied with Tamiya's M1A2 kit.

This was my first scratchbuilding project that involved actually designing and building something, as opposed to adding bits of styrene detail to a kit. It's certainly not the prettiest or most accurate out there, but I think it'll do the trick.

Comments welcome!

Lucas,
I definitely don't see a problem with your results! Despite any concerns you had with the build, the fact that you understand those and are taking steps to streamline your second rack shows a true scratchbuilder's perseverence! Did you cut everything to its correct dimension first, then assemble? If so, I'd like to advise that if you leave certain details long - such as the vertical posts or horizontal strips - and cut them to length afterwards, will not only expedite the build but often make it less "fiddly" to assemble.

Keep up the good work!

Well done Lucas!

What Mike said, cutting some parts after glueing will save you a lot of time and it's often more easier to do.

Keep up the good work!

When you initially was looking to scratchbuild these, I was worried that the strips may be too thick, but it looks great. Hope to see the other done soon and the final product on your 113.

Thanks for the encouragement and advice guys. I did indeed find out that it's best to cut things to measure once I've glued them down. I'll post pics of the second rack once I get the time to build it--work has been hectic (I just got finished with a 12 hour day) so I probably won't have time to build until the weekend.
