Anyone know the mass of the DU penetrator from the 120mm main gun on an Abrams?
I was reading an article about the Navy testing a rail gun:
http://www.fredericksburg.com/News/FLS/2007/012007/01172007/251373/index_html?page=1
It said it would be like "hitting the target with a Ford Taurus going 380 miles per hour."
I would think the kinetic energy of a 120mm DU round doing 1500 m/sec would have to be far greater.
If I did the math right the Ford Taurus would have about 21 million joules of KE.
KE=1/2 (1500 kg) * (170 meters per second)squared
Any thoughts?

I'd like to know what the DU round weighs in at myself.Plus, who gets the honor of stocking that ammo and how do they gear-up for that?
Cheers for a round that glows-

Shaun:
According to Global Security, the newst 120mm round, the M821E3, weighs 56 pounds. You can do the math.

Depleted uranium poses no hazard, unless it is taken into the body. You probably get more radiation exposure from your PC or television.

Thanks Bob! Sounds like a good size shell for a loader to be slinging around.Even with 'ready' autoloaders,it looks like a workout to load up.
Probably makes a sherman 75 round seem like a hunting rifle round! :-)
cheers!

155mm HE rounds are 98 pounds, and loaded by one man, even in multiple round fire missions. THAT is a workout.

Thanks for the replies. Again, not sure if the math is correct but it looks like the DU round only has 11.25 million joules.
That is surprising.
Shaun
Again, if the math is correct that is about 8.1 million foot pounds of force.

Holy Sheet, batman! 3-4 rounds per minute would require an NFL lineman to be the loader, right? Even better in the sandbox I take it?
