Just been hit with a terrible cold here (sniff), and I just thought it would be fun to know if you lot had any "secret" family recipe to deal with this kinda stuff.....

1st off I am regarded as being a HUGE whimp when it comes to being sick. I get the whole " When I was a kid I used to walk to work and work 50 hours a day naked in the cold for 5 pennies a week" kinda crap. So I generally use my sick days.
My recipes really do require REST.
1. Nyquil followed by a double of whisky - your choice.
2. Beer (something light) no Guiness + Alka-Selzer + Powdered Lemonade - whether it be Koolaid, CountryTime whatever.
Obviously the idea is to knock you out and let the the over the counter medicine do it's thing...

Back in the days when I drank, a nice quart of Rock N Rye always worked. I'm told it was the fruit in it that was the secret, but you always had to finish the bottle to get the fruit. :-) :-)
Today some Zicam, plenty of liquids and as much rest as possible.

Yep! Add a couple shots of single malt and the drugs will do their thing and you won't care what day it is either. Then you'll feel better!

BARV's toddy is the trick...
And for a sore throat, a linctus of equal parts honey, lemon juice, and brown vinegar... You know when Hilts and co. try their 4th of July gin in the Great Escape, you too end up saying "Wow" in a very croakey voice... :-)

Vitamins and too many asprin. The asprin may eat a hole in your stomach lining but it also changes your blood ph enough to make it nasty for the virus.

Out here we usual just take a little moonshine. That will cure everything or at least make you not care. Just remember afterward do not drive, operate heavy machinery, use firearms, or any other activity remotely dangerous. However if you do and injure yourself simply take another shot.
Actually I usually take tylenol and or tums and do light work for the day.

Not very helpful regarding your question, but the old adage about colds is "three days coming, three days with, and three days going". I thought I read once where you can only get a particular cold virus once and that's it, but unfortunately there are several hundred different types of cold virus that can be contacted. Discovery just had something on colds in the last week or so and prevention was to wash hands often, and keep your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth as this is how they enter your body.
Hope you feel better soon.

Sleep, increase my protein intake (protein powder, crushed ice, fruit juice concentrate all mixed in a blender, comes out like a non alcoholic tropical smoothie) cough drops, throat spray. And if I realy feel bad then i break some old left over Vicodins and a six pack :-)

I've been told to shave. Yes shave. I have a pretty burly mustashe and every time you sneeze or cough, you release the germs, catch them on your 'stash, and on the in-breath, re-introduce the virus back in. Personally, I keep the 'stash and the cold. And just fight it a little longer.
My $.02,
Cuhail

Geez, I'm a lightweight! Lipton Cup-a-noodle Soup and some Canada Dry Ginger Ale (not mixed together, mind you).
And rest.
