I am beginning to plan a couple of trips with my father who is also interested in Armor. I am looking for suggestions of what collections or museums you all would recommend throughout the US that allow visitors to take photos and spend lots of time looking.
I am hoping to add my photos to the collection of reference photos here on this site as well.
Thanks for any help on this.

I believe any trips involving armor should include Aberdeen, MD. I went there about 4 years ago and it is a really great display.

Hi Anthony,
Just curious....Why is the place call "Proving Ground" ??? Are there some kind of experiment or test conducted in Aberdeen using the vehicle displayed there ?
Is it open to non-American also ?

Mike, the Museum history is on the link provided by PLMP110. The site was once used to evaluate equipment, vehicles, etc. Hence...Proving Grounds.
The Museum is on a US military base and you need to have a daypass to get in. The Museum address and Tel. # are on the website. If you are interested in visiting I suggest you call, write or e-mail and find out what the requirements are for foreign visitors.
Hope this helps!

Hi Pat,
If you're coming east I'd recommend this museum as well...
Hubbard Ohio
AMPS held their big show there last year and it was a great place. All US equipment and in great condition. I believe that most if not all is in running order.

A much superior museum than the Ordnance Museum at APG. There are dozens of restored armor vehicles displayed inside from WW1, WW2, Vietnam, Cold War, Desert Storm and tons of display vehicles outside. Access to the public is easier than APG and a drive down to the washrack area will most likely have Abrams or Bradleys beeing cleaned. What about the Patton Museum at Ft.Knox?

This looks great so far you guys! I am starting to see a northern trip, and a southern trip shaping up. I am really interested in taking lots of shots of different vehicles how are those places in regards to taking pics? APG looks great because its outside and there will be lots of natural light for photos, how about the Hubbard site? Would I be able to set of photography gear (lights) at that site?
Please keep the ideas coming I am really excited to see what you guys can show me.

Rob will be able to tell you about current conditions as to entry to the Patton Museum, but if recollection serves me, it has fairly easy access from what we used to refer to as the Dixie Dieway and no restrictions on photography and the like. Of course my info is 20 years old. I know it has been revised several times. I first saw it in 1968 and it was in one of those old wooden structures with about 75 % of it's stuff being outside. They had another building right behind it where they stored all sorts of cool stuff, but very few people had access to it. I saw the new one shortly after it was done in the late 70's early 80's and was not impessed. Saw it again in late 80's and it had improved considerabley. I think now it is suppossed to bereally first class.

I have never been to these places, but Fort Sill Okla is the home of Artillery and I would imagine they would have a great museum there. Ft Benning GA does have the infantry museum and I have heard wonderful things about it. Up in Huntsville Alabam is Redstone [auto-censored]nal which has a real first class rocket and space museum up there, and let us not forget about the Smithsonian Museum complex which can keep one occupied for several days. You can drop wiffee-poo off at the Art Gallery and hit the American HIstory and Flight sections :-) :-)

Since you're in California, there are several places to visit including as Exile mentioned, the MVTF which is here in NorCal between San Francisco and San Jose. There's another private collection, the World War II US Military Vehicle Museum in San Rafael. I can give you the contact number for that one. Camp Roberts in Paso Robles has a few vehicles. Down in SoCal, there's the American Society of Military History "Tankland" in So. El Monte. East of Palm Springs is the George S. Patton Memorial Museum in Chiriaco Summit. Lots of M60A1 carcasses along with M47's and few other items. Camp Pendleton has the Amphibious Tractor Museum but I don't know how good access is to the public.
Feel free to pm me for more info about any of these locations as I've been to all of them one or more times(except for the AMTRAC Museum).

I dont know or remember exactly when each year they do it, but at Ft. Knox/"Patton Museum", there is a sort of parade where they do little battle re-enactments with running examples from the museum. I do remember seeing photos from one year where they had several WW2 german machines driving around, the most amusing one being a Kettenkrad; of course all the "crew" to these vehicles are in authentic clothing from the time period too. If they are still doing it, they will have it scheduled somewhere on their website. And besides the display vehicles the Patton Museum itself if one of the best in the country with alot of interesting things about armored warfare of the 20th century inside of the main building.
Also, if you are interested Ft. Bliss in El Paso Texas has a museum for rockets and missles. And at the time I was there [1992-1994] they also had an armor display field, as well as the historic late 1800's recreation of old Ft. Bliss and the Cavalry.

If you do ever make it to Fort Knox you could also visit the Ground Mobility Division located in Muldraugh,Ky located approx 4 miles north of the main base. This is the Army's Heavy recovery school and you would be able to observe the M88A1 and M88A2 recovery vehicles as well as some M113's. Make sure you bring your hip-waders though...the place is a huge mud hole.

 Patton Museum
There is direct access to museum parking from 31W. No security checkpoints. Gate to 31W opens 30 minutes before the Patton Museum opens and closes 30 minutes after the Patton Museum closes
