Vegemite.
Banned in the 50 states.
World gone mad...
For those of you who don't know what you're missing, now you'll never know what you're missing...
It contains folate and apparently it can only be added to breads, etc.
Got me thinking what has changed suddenly to make this illegal? We've still got your back in Iraq, Afghanistan, etc. so the Bush man must be stroppy with little Johnny for some reason...

Maybe bush ate some, and smeared it on too thick.

Nah, he probably just tasted some. Can't stand it myself, but banning seems a bit harsh.

hi guys,
Maybe someone found out an illegal way of using the stuff ,and they banned it!
This might be a bit off topic and don't want to start a flame war..but i'm a Marmite man myself, never could stand Vegemite:-) (hihi). But seriously, why on earth have they banned it?Ok,it has an acquired taste but its nutritional values are great.Cheers,Shay

Gday Shay... Don't know if you know the history, but I will concede that Marmite was created first (only conceding this as we have beat you in a few things lately;)) An aussie created his own derivative and called it 'Parwill'... Their slogan went something like "Marmite, but Parwill"...

Hang on Guys,,its October not April 1st!
Having worked with a bunch of Aussies for 3 years and having to listen to their wingeing when they either ran low or couldnt get hold of any Vegemite...( as you might have guessed I cant stand the stuff,,but then its certainly a love it or hate it thing, same as Marmite over here),,I find this quite a shock.
This is an equivelent of the British Government banning fish and chips!

Id be very interested to find out the reasoning behind this. Australians all over America must be crying into their Stubbies today.

It's because it has folate added, and the US FDA only permits folate to be added to bread products.

Not that the ban really makes any difference as I have never known a single person here that has tried vegimite or even has any idea what it is. It's only known as the sandwich in the "Men at Work" song.

Vegemite looks like very well used motor oil, 10W30 after several hundred thousand miles. The taste could stun a buzzard, kind of like Moxie, only a lot stronger. Marmite is like unto Vegemite, but saltier, IIRC. The morning dj on the station I listen to gave some away as a gift for being able to give the entomilogical derivation of "sideburns. " (Named for Gen. Ambrose Burnside, Union General in th ACW whi had prominemt muttonchop, well, sideburns.) Unfortunaltely, I won a jar. I had to wait until a hazardous materials clean up to get rid of it.

When I worked in a brewery for a few months, before starting a full time job, I learned what Marmite and I guess Vegimite is manufactured from, in truth when the chute got jammed I used to go and shovel it, to get it in the lorry for transport to wherever the stuff is brewed. After that I have never been able to face the smell let alone eat it. It reminded me what you see floating in sewers. I personally would ban it from the Earth, if only to stop my wife eating it.................yuk.......yuk.......yuk

Good on you George is all I can say.

I see it here on the shelves at the grocery store's here. I always wonder who actually eats that stuff and how long has it been sitting there.

Sounds like one of those "adventuresome wholesome" products I have happily overlooked along the path of life. I don't believe I'll wake up tomorrow with an overwhelming desire to seek it out.

well let me explain.
In recent years the United-States has been subject to natural forces of demand and supply and the government has been obligated to enforce national policy regarding certain products in order to fight the pure monopilistic competition which is ruining the countries well being. The Bush administration has thus decided to fight the high level of competition which has been greatly afecting prices and the health of people and is begining to shift towards a more socialist economy and well as a wide array of nuclear weapons to fight against the expansion of peanut butter markets

Yes, but can you paint with it, like you can with Marmite?

Personally I prefer Fray Bentos, but it doesn't appear to be in my local supermarket anymore...

But NOTHING beats Marmite and cheese on a slice of hot toast!

Not even Worcester Sauce? - which allegedly has an equally suspect origin to Marmite.

The legend of Worcester Sauce, including the bit about it being abandoned in a cellar for a year...

Worcester Sauce

Obviously tasting it would be the first thing on you mind after that time...I'm just glad not to have excavated any amphoras with garum still in them

Greatest two mistakes I made when living in Sydney was to make some toast and spread on the vegemite,I spent ten minutes with my head down the U bend calling out for hueeeey, mistake number two,I visited Bankstown (some would say that was a mistake in its self) where my good lady wife pointed out some springrolls "oh they call them chico rolls here" so I purchases two of the disired munchables instead of noodles prawns beanshoots and the like NO I got a mouth full of undercooked cabbage covered in batter one pavement Pizza later and in a state of shock she carried me to the car, never touched either again for fourteen years.here endeth the lesson.

Our Geography professor gave us a lecture on Australia here at good ol' KSU and then invited us to try some at the end with crackers. I can honestly say It wasn't bad but it wasn't good either. I'd eat it again but I'm a fat kid so that doesn't count!

How do you all normally eat it? Maybe if we had it another way it would be better for our ( American)tastes.

PS: You should have seen the look on the face of the sorority girls when they saw us trying it!

HOT toast, plenty of marg ("It's like budaahh"!) and a nice even consistency...
