When is the IPMS Nats next year? I know they announced that it would be Orange County, CA but nothing is on the website about it. I hope to make that show.

I assume they made an announcement in KC about who will be hosting the 08 show. Who did it turn out to be? I have a project that might be ready by 08.

Yep, '08 in VA Beach, I don't remember the exact dates for O.C. in '07 but I do know it's late August.

Thanks guys. Va Beach again... Oh well. That is darn far away from Oregon. Looks like I better get some stuff together for next year if I want to go to a show.

Hello Major:

In the IPMS/USA bylaws it states that the National Convention
held each year must be in the month of July or August. . . the
hottest part of the year for most of us in the Continential
part of the United States.

I realize the laws was inserted so that modelers could bring
their families as the children would be out of school.
Personally, I see early June as a better time, but also don't
think the bylaw will change. I'm thinking no one in authority has
really even raised the question. I believe we Americans adhere to
the "but we've always done it that way" philosphy.
However, the air conditioning in the Hyatt Regency Crown
Center Hotel and in the Exhibition Hall was just great
throught out the entire convention. Even late at night.

Dave, Here in Region 1, we discussed moving local and regional events around and early June has some serious scheduling problems. For teachers, this is the end of the year, finals, etc and they'd be hard pressed to get away. Same with kids coming any distance. Also, this is the height of high school graduation and wedding season making some venues unavailable and forcing members to make hard, and potentially costly, decisions. ("Honey, I can't go to your sister's wedding, I have to go to the Nationals." ) I suspect there is less demand for buisness type conventions during these months, makig it easier to get a better deal on the venues.
The fall is back to school and many local events. Until recently, there were at least 9 events in New England and Eastern New York from September through late November, with a couple more in the western part of the region.

AJ:

I think a lot of what you say has a great deal of merit. And I don't mean to
imply that my questions about having the Nats in June instead of July or
August is definitely the step that should be taken. I met just a few family
members with their children at the KC Nats. I looked thruout the
contest room in KC for the entire days of the convention and after I looked
at the adults vs. the number of children I guess I would want to ask the
following:

Should IPMS/USA conduct a survey to determine how many families
attend the National Convention each year? In comparison to the number
of attendees who do not bring their children. My guess is that the number
of children present with parents is a very small percentage, as in
less than 7 percent. So that, in my opinion gets back to my original
point. Will a survey by IPMS/USA Journal or a vote among the current
members be done to determine this point? Of course not. So we
will continue to have the Nats in July or August as the bylaws indicate.

I would definately have to agree with you Rick. As you know we had my son Brad there who is 15 ...and had it not been for the college convention that was there as well...he would have been a very lonely kid.

As one who used to plan marketing events it probably won't make a difference what summer months you plan it. There will always be some reason or another that an entire segment of the population cannot attend. Sometimes you just have to plan an event and whoever can make it will show up.

Research has shown that the best attended events are those that pick the same time and/or place every year. Since the Nationals rotates around, well the Nation, obviously there cannot be a static location. But as an example 2006 KC was the 1st Friday/Saturday in August. If you continued to have it the 1st Frid/Sat in August people can plan long in advance so long as the locations ahve been announce. If I understand correctly it will be 2007 Anaheim and 2008 Virginia Beach. If it were assured that these occured the 1st Fri/Sat of August 07 and 08 I can already X out those days on my calander today with the travel details to follow later. If not then no commitments could be made

OK, I got the skinny on the '07 Nats in Orange county. The 2007 IPMS/USA convention will be held on August 22-25, 2007 at the Anaheim Mariott in Anaheim (naturally!). The website for the event is www.ipmsusa2007.org and will be turned on on or about September 7. The dates for this one blow! When they announced the '07 bid winner last year here in Atlanta my wife even got excited thinking about a trip to L.A., then we found out the dates. The problem is we are both teachers, here in the southeast many school systems start back in early August and it's next to impossible to get off that early in the school year. So, no trip to the left coast for us. I realize that the host chapters sometimes have to take what they can get date wise when reserving these big convention centers but it would be nice if they take things like this into account. Oh well I'm just going to have to look forward to Va. Beach. These days at the rate I'm finishing things I might actually have something to enter by then!!

Cheers,
Mike

Heck, the average IPMSer is at least 45 years old. And has grand-kids.

I'll stick my neck out here and say that most "families" attending this year's Nats were local. Many from K.C., some from St. Louis, not many from beyond that. I worked many hours at the registration desk, so I think I have a good feeling for this.

BTW, Rick, no one but you gave a hoot how they pronouced Steve Hustad's name during the awards ceremony. Your screams of "It's Huuu - stad" drove off several people from the back of the room, including me. I know they should know his name by now, but What the heck!? Steve doesn't care.

Steve Hustad is a great modeler, no matter how his name is pronounced ... but I still don't like how he paints gunmetal.

The Aris and Bill show does have a way with butchering pronounciations of all but the simplest names.

OK, one more note, the dates for the '08 Va. Beach show are August 6-9. I'm not liking the sound of those dates either . Basically most dates in August aren't good for me because of when the school year begins here. The state legislature is possibly going to pass a bill this coming year that would mandate all school systems in Georgia would have the same start and finish dates (starting after Labor Day from what I've heard). We can only hope it passes.

That does blow! My oldest kid starts school the week before while my youngest starts the week of the show. Just bloody great! This will be a tough one for me to swing. I'm really going to have to work on SWMBO for this one.
