From back in the day all the way up to WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam and today. Any suggestions?
What makes a good one etc. etc?

The Odd Angry Shot
Saving Private Ryan
The Longest Day
Das Boot
The Guns of Navarrone
Full Metal Jacket
Platoon
Black Hawk Down
Bridge On the River Kwai
The Great Escape

Darren's list is a good one.
However, I would add Galipoli (sp?), Battleground, Porkchop Hill and
Last of The Mohigans, the version with Madeline Stowe . . . sigh, oh
my!!! And with Daniel Day Lewis and I would
subtract, . . . oh, ma' gosh. . . not easy to subtract four
from Darren's list.
Hokay, I got it. This is my list of 24 Best War pictures!!!!! :-) :-) :-)

I never liked When We Were Soldiers - don't care for the directing style at all. I could add a few suggestions.
Enemy Below
The Lighthorsemen (semi-sequal to Galipoli).

Can't disagree with most of the choices; Bruckheimer's Pearl Harbor? *Gack!*
Others that haven't been mentioned; Dark Blue World. Sometimes cliched, but one of the few to show what happened to Czech (same thing happened to Poles) pilots, who flew for the RAF, in post-war Communist Europe.
Downfall, German story of last days of Hitler. Not a huge amount of war action, still worth watching
Enemy at the Gates Jude Law as a Russian Sniper - dramatised events of true Stalingrad story of a top Russian sniper V top German.
Gettysburg? Kinda - Martin Sheen was too short to play General Lee. Too much speecifying at times.

I don't consider Kelly's Hero's a war film. It's a spaghetti western that just happens to take place during WWII.

I miss you more than Michael Bay missed the mark
when he made Pearl Harbor
I miss you more than that movie missed the point
and that's a lot girl
And now you've gone away
and all I can say is Pearl Harbor sucked
and I miss you
I need you like Ben Affleck needs acting school
He was terrible in that film
I need you more than Cuba Gooding needed a bigger part
He's much better than Ben Affleck and now
all I'm trying to say, is Pearl Harbor sucked, and I miss you
Why does Michael Bay get to keep on making movies?
I guess Pearl Harbor sucked just a little more than I miss you

Wow so many good movies that I left out, doing my list again I would have to add Kelly's Heroes & Zulu. Both of these are classics in my book.

The Lighthorsemen (semi-sequal to Galipoli)
I wouldnt exactly say that The Lighthosemen was a sequel to Gallipoli, but i can see how that inference can be made to an overseas audience. I guess the two movies would be like comparing Windtalkers to Saving Private Ryan - both the same conflict, but two totally different campaigns.
Australia's 'Slouch-Hatted Heroes' havent fared well on international screens, and I given that Gallipoli and TLH both came out in the 1980s, it is easy to see how the two are similar. I would go further in saying that TLH was driven by the success of Gallipoli!
What is even more interesting is that inbetween the two movies was a 10 part TV series called 'The ANZACS', which features a lot of the same actors as TLH.... I guess some roles suit some actors, but the prominence of some actors in one film heps drives the success of another.
Cheers,
Aaron.

A particularly good book to read - if you can find it; 'The Desert Column' Ion L. Idriess. Idriess was in the Australian Light Horse at Gallipoli and later took part in the battles around the Suez Canal, and through Palestine. The book was compiled from the diaries he kept (against regulations) during the time.

There was a film made in 1944 called 'Thirty Seconds over Tokyo' which was about Doolittle's B-25 raid off the Hornet in 1942. Genuine WW 2 B-25s.

I may have missed it, but 'Sahara' with Humphrey Bogart has to be on the list just because there's a tank through the whole movie.

"Hunt for red October"...only because I'm fond of Mr Connery.
...I suppose "Sky Captain and the world of tomorrow" wouldn't be a likely candidate for this thread now would it...but she looks so good with/without that eye patch! :-)
