I was channel surfing and saw the "Top tanks of all time" on the military channel. They considerd firepower, armor, ease of manufacture, etc. IIRC the rankings were:

1. T-34
2. M1 Abrams
3. Tiger
4. Merkava
5. T-55
6. Challenger
7. Panther
8. Sherman
9. Some British WWI tank that was "first tank in combat"
10.

I can't remember number 10 and I'm fairly sure that I kept them in order. I was just curious what you guys thought of the "list"

I saw the show as well on Discovery channel and the one about the fighter aircrafts too.....

I think that the list runs like this:

10: Sherman
9 : Sheridan
8 : Panther
7 : T-72
6 : Swedish Tank S
5 : Centurion
4 : Merkava
3 : T-34
2 : Abrams
1 : Leopard II

The BIG question that follows is, where is Challenger II?

Hi guys

I saw the "Top Ten Tanks" the other day on the Military Channel, on the show that I saw the Challanger II did make the top ten. I don't remember the exact number.
HB11 That British WWI tank you mentioned was know simply as "Tank." If my memory is right, I believe there were two types of this vehicle known as a male and female. The main differences being a side main gun or lack there of. I could very well be wrong on this last piece.
She was called "tank" as a way to hide her real purpose. The idea was to have the Germans believe she was a new type of storage tank, and not a weapon.

Not to forget, where's the Tiger and Kingtiger in this list?
Maybe we should do our own list, eh?

Yeah the list certainly is debatable but it is hard to narrow down a definitive 10 considering the number of actual tanks out there around the world.

I saw this documentary earlier in the year so i ended up proposing a campaign on this which is currently running. Feel free to enlist if you guys are keen.

You can check out more about it here

Hi guys

I have to agree. There is no real way to compare a tank made today to one made 50 - 60 odd years ago. Its almost like comparing apples to rocks. I do like Jeremy's idea on a list of our own. Maybe break it down by Nation, or period. Something like best Soviet made tank, or best WWII era Tank. That way a Panther is not in the same game with a M1. We would have to come up with some other way to judge them rather than the size of the main gun. What do you guys think ?

I would be interested in forming a list if it hasn't been done 3 million times before on here. I would like to hear what you all thought about different tanks in different time periods.

Maybe we could make the list as the best WW II, Cold War and Modern tank or something?? I don't know....but I'm curious though.
