I want to dress up my Sherman with Sanbags but I'm not sure how to build a rack for them. Obviously out of styrine, but what should it look like, just beams with chicken wire? How were they attached to the hull etc. Any help would be greatly appreciated by me and the plastic crew of my Sherman

Hi Ralph,

when you go to my site you can find a sherman with racks, If I have the time I will try to scan and post the construction of it

Great post Ronny. as you have probably used evergreen or plastruct for your construction, do you remember what sizes of each shape you used. I mean are the thin ones 1mm x 2mm or something like that and what size is the "H" bar?

Hey Plasticbattle,

The H-beam was some scrap I had laying around and it was 5mm in height and 1mm thick (so it was perfect) and I used plasticard of 1mm for the rest.

For the height of the vertical beams I used the hull of the model as a guide so I don’t have any real measurements of it, sorry

Hope this helps.

Hi Ronny, thanks for the drawings. Did you fasion those beams from styrene? I've never scratchbuilt anything before, so some of the stuff that may be obvious to some of you is beyond me (for now). How do you controll the amount of curve in the strips, did you laminate lengths to form the I-beam on the bottom?

Hi Ralph,

The beams are simple plasticard strips and to create the curve I used boiling water and the end of a paintbrush.

Put the strips in boiling water for a few minutes and then form then by bending it over the brush handle, let cool, trim, ready.
