Err... you mean the queen, not the queen mum. She died in 2002, aged 101 .

God save our gracious Queen,
Long live our noble Queen,
God save the Queen!
Send her victorious,
Happy and glorious,
Long to reign over us;
God save the Queen!

Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour;
Long may she reign;
May she defend our laws,
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice,
God save the Queen!

Happy birthday ma'am

Heard her personal fortune just gained $72m AU...
In the last year alone...
And she doesn't like ice cubes...

Kev,

Britain is a constitutional monarchy, so the Queen has no power over political decisions.

there is a good overview here British Monarchy

And lets not get into the politics of Northern Ireland shall we?

Cheers

"I cannot lead you into battle, I do not give you laws or administer justice, but I can do something else," she said. "I can give you my heart." -Elizabeth II

And what a heart - Bless you Elizabeth! I can only imagine how difficult her life has been - the burden she has carried since her uncle bailed on the crown for Wallis Simpson.

I have a question -why do some of the Brits have a union Jack and others a red cross on a white field?

The red Cross of St George (if memory serves) on a white field is the flag of England, while the Union Jack is the flag of the United Kingdom. So an English member would have the former, just as the Scots have theirs with the Cross of St Andrew (hope I got that right), and the Welsh their good ol' Dragon flag. Those who aren't too particular which part of the UK they're in or from might simply fly the Union Jack. Sort of like your state flags in the US, just much grander. LOL

Almost right
The Union flag,as is it's correct name is a mixture of the flags of St George(England ,white field red cross)
St Andrew (Scotland,blue field white diagonal cross)
St Patrick (Ireland ,white field red diagonal cross)
The Welsh flag doe's not feature for some reason.
It Should only really be called the Union Jack,when flow from the Jackstaff of a ship,hence the name Jack

Spot on Andy I'm always correcting people when they call our National flag a Jack and most of 'em couldn't tell if it was flown upside down or not.
I show the cross of St George because I'm proud to be English, I'm also proud of the Union, even though SWMBO is Welsh

Its due to the fact England had conquered and intergrated Wales by the time the union flag was created.

Interesting bit about the flags.....thank you guys!! I really had no idea it was so "involved."

Question then.......I mostly see the Union flag flown and in movies (yea, I know, movies.....). I don't believe I've ever seen the Cross of Saint George flown. Is there a reason for this?

Wide open to a good history lesson!

Everyone I know calls it the union jack, it's only in the last few years of PC that I've been hearing union flag.
I prefer jack myself.

Would you fly both flags together? Similar to what we do in the states where we would fly the national flag with the state flag below. Does one take precedence over the other?

By 'movies' , I assume you mean films?
What films did you have in mind? The St. George cross is specifically England, so if the film is about the UK in general it would feature the flag of the Union...

Well, the Union flag is the 'official' national flag. The armed forces come under this 'official' status, just as the UK's borders are the internationally regognized borders. You will probably only see the English, Scottish, and Welsh flags flown at sporting events like cricket, football, and rugby. I think at the Olympics, the UK is the recognized team.
