Thus 4 October 1582 was followed by 15 October 1582."

What time is it there now?

I hate when someone will ask me at the race track here what time the race starts. I will tell them the time of the start, and 7 times out of 10 they will follow up with, "Is that your time or mine?" How would I know what "their" time is? Sheesh, I am doing good to know what I do know, I should'nt be expected to be clarvoient.

Ben Franklin's idea about saving candles and oil may have been where it all started, but you can blame the merchant classes for this one. It actually has nothing to do with the farmers.... they wish it would go away just as much as every other sane person would. The mercantile brain trust saw how much more people were spending on their way home from work during the summer time when the days lasted longer. They whined to the governments of the time (yes, both Upper and Lower Canadas as well as the 13 colonies) in a classic example of what would come to be known as 'lobbying' , to have daylight savings time brought in to allow people to shop more at the end of the day by making daylight last as long as they could. Blame not the tillers of the fields, 'tis the shoppe keepers that should be hanged....!!!

I'm just sayin.... :-)

The urge to switch to permanent BST (British Summer Time = GMT +1) is strong with our comedy politicians. Amazing what the urge to Do Something will lead to.

Not much fun if you live in West Wales, when I worked in Carmarthen in the winter of 1989-90 it was still dark at 8AM GMT which would mean a really short mornings on BST.
