I feel so bad for people like the ice skater, Onoh?, would trains for years then doesn't even make the cut for his event.

Oh no, I've got no sympathy for Onoh.
He lost his chance because he was showboating. He was showing off, left it till the last seconds and thought he'd blow the guy in front away just to try and prove somthing. Too full of himself IMO.
Then he came out very late for the "B" final and made a point of being totally un-interested in racing and then messed about in the closing stages.
Very bad sportmanship I say.

Compliments to Shani Davis, the first African-American ice skater to win an olympic medal ( and a gold one to boot too ).

I hope this will inspire more African-Americans to take up this sport.

Sure, you can't earn millions with it, but you can earn a good living, see something of the world, and win olympic medals :-)

From what I can observe the Olympics has very little interest to the American people unless there is an American involved in the story.

Isn't it the same all around the world?
Here in Japan, only the stories involving Japanese athletes raise any interest.
And we only see events featuring Japanese competitors. Well, I suppose I should say "mostly," as I did see a bit of hockey this evening.

Since Japan has no medals at all as of this posting, general interest in the Olympics is waning rapidly here.
One bright spot: Japan's recent successes against Canada and Great Britain in women's Curling has been the big story for the last few days. It's even made a Curling fan out of me and my wife! If Japan gets any kind of medal in Curling, I expect it to take off as a popular sport here!

I have actually been watching a lot of curling and hockey regardless of who has been competing. Don't understand either one but they are fun to watch. I have also enjoyed watching the over hyped members of the American team blow it (cough cough) Bodie Miller.
Watching the Italian bob sledders sing their anthem in the snow last night was cool too.

Yay Sweden Men's Hockey. There are 5 Detroit Red Wings on that team. I think All 3 goals in their 3-2 Gold Medal victory came from the Wings!!

I have to agree, US Olympic coverage sucks. I

Ain't that the truth. Watched the biathlon yesterday (mass start). It was really interesting to see how the two events affected each other with penalty laps for a missed shot. It was quite clear the American didn't have a snowball's chance in Phoenix, but the NBC commentators kept making it sould llike he was about to do a Rocky. It was Hakkonen this and Hakkonen that. At least they acknowledged the feat of the Pole in beating out the favorite from Finland.
IMHO, the Olympics on NBC was a promo for the Stars of Disney on Ice Capades in the same way the weekly WWE broadcasts are promos for Wrestelmania Pay Per View.
Gotta stop getting up on these darned soapboxes. :-)

Thank God they are over. I hope next time they put them on pay per view or clutter up ESPN. It's a crying shame that shows like Simon's sing-a-long and fall down on ice, and spin your partner all beat it in the ratings, but the US telecasts really really stink. Of course what is really sad is that is the way TV is going. Well I've got you guys and models and I find my self watching more and more TV reruns and old movies. (Yea AMC, TNT, TBS, TCM and Nickelodeon what ever)and (oh joy) reading law books.

I wish they could broadcast without cheerleading.

You can tell when an athlete is going to screw-the-pooch when the pre-event hype overflows ... I have no sympathy for Bode Miller & I get really annoyed when the network continues to provide him airtime to be a flake ...

I too would be interested in watching other than US performances & events ... One can learn something ...

But regardless of country, I'm getting tired of all these "overcame so much adversity" stories ... none of these folks are living below the poverty level ...

As always, all the downhill/slalom/super-g events are great, as are bobsled/skeleton/luge, and now we have snowboard cross added in ... and I have yet to be able to figure out the physics & atheltics that allows speed-skating to even happen ... and on the otherside, there are all those skating events I nodded off in ...

Yeah, looks like it's finally time for Nike to change the name of their site to "www.missthegates&joinbodeforadrinkortwelve.com" Whatta punkarse. And all of his "Yeah, well I still rocked & I had a great time doin' it" just makes him look more pathetic. Maybe he should wise up to the fact that private citizens PAID for some of his "party Time", and that an athlete who would have given it an actual heartfelt shot & gotten some valuable experience was excluded by this self-centered prick.

Rant over.

I think the "talking heads" (all empty) at NBC ruined it. They wanted to make sexy stories and I wanted to watch the games. the 8pm start time (In California) ment my kids could only watch an hour or so and then it was bed time. NBC only focused on what they though was contraversal - I got tired of watching 5000meter skating.

Bob Kostas is a terrible host and when Bodie turned to be a bust they savaged him. ---

I am so sorry ABC lost the Olympics - Its no wonder the closing ceremony lost out in the ratings to Dancing with the Stars

I saw ten minutes of the closing ceremonies...500 :-)8 Madonna Like a Virgin WannaBees and a bunch of angels wearing goggles!
Looked like a Mad Max-post-apocalyptic-first-communion-ceremony-as-directed-by-George Romero .
What kind of drugs were those on!
And pass some over here.
Right quick!

The Canadian CBC coverage of the closing ceremonies was excellent. Very classy, educated timely commentaries, and great athlete interviews.

Very good points brought up about why Canada doesn't pay their Olympic athletes bonuses to win medals while other nations fork out money left and right when they win a medal.

I am very fortunate to live within minutes from a World Class ski jump hill, bobsleigh/luge/skeleton track, speed skating oval track, and World Cup cross country ski venue. I have met and seen many of your nation's athletes train and compete at Calgary's facilities. Probably no better place to conduct high altitude training in North America other than Denver.

I am going to the World Cup Speed Skating Championships in a couple of weeks in Calgary...good luck to all your athletes....Canada's speed skaters will be on home ice!

Hope you all can make it to the Olympics in Vancouver in 2010.

In my opinion, I actually thought the Olympics coverage overall was pretty well done. I liked the closing ceremony, especially the guy flying on a fan! That was cool. For those that didn't like the closing ceremony and the theme, let me expain just a little. First of all, the closing ceremony is supposed to be a happy time, a time of celebration at another Olympics gone by. That gives light to the jokers and other smiling figures. Add in Italy's renassaince history and I think the Italians enjoyed it

I also enjoyed some of the historical background features. This is the first Olympics that I watched indepth, and given all the new sports and rules (and the old sports too for that matter), an explaination was more than helpful. The bios of all the upcoming athletes were helpful as well. It is supposed to give the viewer a personal connection to the athlete.

As for the Bode Miller, speed skaters, etc. I tried not to follow it too much. After his third race, I knew that he was done. For everything else, just ignore it. This is American media for crying out loud. Why in the world would the American media suspend it fascination for controversy just because of the Olympics?

And finally, what I would like others to remember the most was the historical breakthroughs. Shauni Davis winning being the first black individual medalist in Olympic history, American women's snowboarding and all the breakthrough they made relegating the differences between male and female snowboarding to being just that: male and female; gender became the only difference. For all the moments (figure skating, speed skating anyone, gold hockey game?) and all the firsts (see above), that is what I will take away from this Olympics.

In closing, I don't care that other (and, in my opinion, crappy) shows beat the Olympic ratings: they sure didn't in my room and on my dorm floor.
