Pretty neat article. It's all about the perceived tone...

I totally agree with this article. In my work I "chat" online with people from all over the world. Many times I have to remind myself of things like this so I don't take personally something somebody might write me.

For example if somebody writes "thanks for nothing!" I can be pretty sure they're not happy with me. But they could be writing English as a second language and be confused as to what that can be read as. Much harder is when somebody writers, "thanks a lot!." Even with the explanation point it's hard to know what they are meaning by that. Are they being sarcastic, and they really mean the obosite of what they write, or are they really thanking me for a job well done?

Either way before anybody gets involved in a flame war you need to step back, and make sure what the other person is saying is what you're assuming they are saying.

Thats where I think emoticons (smileys) can help alot, like this, using Rodger's example

Thanks a lot!
Or
Thanks alot!

Which one do you think feels that they have gotten no help?

hmmm..... maybe missing-lynx needs it's own set of smileys.....

And what exactly do you mean by that?

He's say that you need to check what the person actually said and not just scimming through, and making assumptions....

But shirley people observantly read each post from the start of a thread, and consider their responses likewise?

I found the best way to end them is just to ignor them.

Never been a Shirley, but dated one-once... :-)

Bingo, somebody actually caught my reference. I can't tell you how many times people I'm chatting with have said, "roger Rodger."

Took an old fart like Grumpy to catch it.
