Guys and Gals,

for my dio I need to build a couple of wooden ammo/supply crates.

can anybody tell me the measurements of these crates (in real life or scale) that were used during WWII ? They can be Axis as wel as Allies...

I haven't been into wooden crates before, but I can imagine there's an awful lot of them, all in different sizes ?? I'm looking for the type that can serve as a low table....

I don't have any dimensions on the ammo boxes, however, Academy has a couple of accessory kits that include ammo boxes. Allied & German Tank Supplie Set I (kit # 1382) and Tank Supplies Set I (kit # 1383) have tank ammo crates and small arms ammo crates that could be stacked to make a table easily. They could also easily be mass produces by using RTV molds if you need many of the same type.

Eagle,

The size depends on what was inside. Ammo Crates come in Hundreds of Shapes & sizes. I've got some Verlinden & Tamiya ones laying around.

I may have a few of them around here. i'll check. I once made a whole ammo depot on 1/35 (A dio with my own unit when I was in the army, involving a scratchbuilt/adapted Land Rover)...
Ik maak dadelijk net een moule van andere dingen. Als ik nog kistjes vind op 1/35 stop ik er gauw enkele bij.
I'll see if any of that survived the years. If all goes well, I'll mail you a few on Monday. I'll keep you posted.

Bad news, Danny. I don't have any spares and that dio is (hopefully) still at my parent's home in Bruges. We'll go there near Christmas, so I'll check.
In the meanwhile, I can help you out with artillery ammo : 155 mm and 8" caliber shells, as well as the cannisters with the gunpowder. Even pallets to go with that. Only I'm not sure if such stuff already existed in WWII.
And about every US ammo ever made... in 1/16th scale...

Eagle:

No need to split hairs over this one -- after all, you're just making a field-expedient table. As Matt stated, crates and ammo boxes came in all shapes and sizes. Just make one the size you need and I'll guarantee that no one will ever question it.

On the other hand, when someone is doing a dio of an artillery or position (something with a lot of ammo/boxes of the same sizes laying aroung) you might need to get dimensions and, most importantly, be consistent.

Jan,

Thanks for the offer !! I would love to say yes to this, but I'm sure I can't use them on this dio.....Maybe I'll keep you to it on a next dio....

I'll scratchbuild some crates though. Like Hollowpoint said it ain't such a big deal, since there's no special ammo involved. Nobody would notice I guess.

If you need some alternatives, I suggest you concentrate on things that are really supposed to be in an Ardennes cottage (as opposed to tank ammo). Things like table, chairs, maybe a little stove, chopped wood logs kept from the rain, milking cans, pots and kettles, even a small napkin on the table. Some agricultural work gear (spades, rakes,...). Maybe some toys from the kids or old stuff stowed away by someone... (old baby cot, bike without wheels, broken picture frame, ...)
You can either make this something that was lived in, like a hunter's hide-away, or just an empty farm shed where old stuff is rusting away...

Jan,

your absolutely right... There's more to a shed then some wooden crates...

I'm gonna do an old workbench including tools, the pile of firewood with the trunk and axe to match...

Thanks for clearing my (twisted) mind again !!
