Im going to ask a silly question here so please bear with me.

What constitutes a win in these RC tank battles? How exactly do you compete against other RC tanks?

We battle with tamiya full option' RC tanks. They are equipped with infra-red combat systems which record hits. There are three settings which determine a tanks firing interval and the number of incoming hits needed to kill it, heavy(9 secs. and 9 hits), medium(5 secs and 5 hits) and light(3 secs and 3 hits).
When hit by an incoming shot a tank 'shudders', emits an explosion sound and indicator lights flash. As well the engine noises change to a damaged sound and the tank gets progressively slower until it 'dies' on the final 'kill' shot when you get a big explosion and the tank shuts down; you're dead!
Thats basically how it works, but there are a lot of strategies you learn along the way. We set up 1/16th scale buildings, trees, tank traps etc to make the battles more interesting.
We have singles knock out tournaments; king of the hill,(everybody against everybody, and team events.

If you want to come along, I'll let you try it yourself with one of my tanks.

Matt, yes there is a branch of RCTC in Christchurch.

The hobby of rc tank battling is only relatively new, but I expect in time it will be up there in popularity on an organised (club) basis, like there is with rc cars, trucks, ships and planes. RCTC is a national body ser up to act as an umbrella to assist the development of branches throughout NZ.
