I'd like to add three books to the list. Having been a bubblehead for 24 years, I will limit my recommendations to what I know best...Submarine Warfare. If I had to pick one, it would be Roscoe's.

Silent Victory by Blair Clay
Japanese Submarine Force and WWII by Carl Boyd and Akihiko Yoshida
United States Submarine Operations in WWII by Theodore Roscoe

v/r,
Cob

All 3 are published by the Naval Institute Press

COB--good to hear from you. The Blair book is a true classic. I contacted Jim about organizing the history forum to allow us easy access to the growing book list.

"U.S. Silent Service; Dolphins & Combat Insignia 1924-1945" by David A. Jones. Published by R. James Bender, a well done book.

We really have something going here that we each need to add to as the situation dictates. I am awaiting word from Jim about structuring our heading to easy finding the book lists. Keep those cards and letters coming.

Two books recently published;
"Grunt Gear: USMC Combat Infantry Equipment of WW2" by Alec S. Tulkoff. Published by R. James Bender.
"Paramarine: Uniforms and Equipment of Marine Corps Parachute Units in WW2" by Chris Mason. Published by Schiffer military history.
Both are highly recommended if you are interested in USMC uniforms and equipment.

I'll toss in a couple I read recently and really enjoyed:

"Flags of Our Fathers" by James Bradley & Ron Powers
"Ghost Soldiers: The Forgotten Epic Story of World War II's Most Dramatic Mission" by Hampton Sides

I checked the lists fairly closely. I hope someone else didn't already add these...

I would also like to add Lance Zedric's book "Secret Warriors: History of the Alamo Scouts" They say that the Alamo Scouts are the forerunners of the US SpecOps.

The Japanese Occupation of the Philippines by A. Hartendorf. He compiled a lot of new materials during the period.

Man, ya'll. I had forgotten all about this tread!!! Keenan - Ghost Soldiers, was a great read. Having trained for that kind of mission, back in the '70s (man it makes me feel old!), I could really appreciate what the 6th Ranger Battalion and the Philippine guerrilas accomplished.

I picked up an interesting book on Ft. Drum. Not Ft. Drum, NY, but Ft. Drum, Manila Bay, 1942. Filled with photos, engineer drawings, and photos of the recapture by American Engineers in 1945.

Jeff-- I don't believe we did a similar topic on the European side. If we didn't, what do think?

Here are a few. Somebody mentioned United States Submarine Operations of WWII by Roscoe. The same author also has United States Destroyer Operations of WWII. Another good one is Blood on the Sea by Sinclair. Lastly is The Battle of Leyte Gulf 23-26 October 1944 by Cutler. This book reads more like a novel than a history. Great story.
