I am new to Testor Model master paint as all along I am using
laquer paint. Recently I bought 1 bottle of MM paint just to try it
out :

I have a few questions and I hope to get some helped :

1) MM paint is enamel, can I just thin it with normal turpentine or must
I used the thinner for MM, it pretty expensive ?

2) Can Model Master paint be used as a base coat for my tank ? It enamels
and as I understood, enamel is usually used for weathering only and it
smells funny. My whole rooms has that funny smell when I air-brush it !!!

3) I plan to pin wash my tank using burnt umber Artise oil that will thin
it with Turpentine. Will this mixture affect the base coat that is paint
with MM enamel ?

I wouldn't advise using mineral spirits to thin paint you'll airbrush. I would go ahead and use the recommended thinner. Vent our room while doing so, the life you save could be your own. Yes, the thinner may be a bit expensive, but in the long run it's worth the cost.

You can use artist chalks and get the desired effect that you would with a wash and IMHO it's easier to control. Build it in layers and flat coat between applications.

Like so:

Give it a try and be sure to let us see how things turned out.

Happy Modeling

hi there pionner and welcome to Armorama!

MM paints can be thinned with mineral spirits. U can try the expansive testor thinner or humbrol thinner.. but IMHO i'm using cheap mineral spirits and it work just fine..
but when airburshing with enamel (lacquer as well), use in well ventilation room. Use any type of fan/blower to vent the smelly air outside...or you may use spray booth..
and use a good respirator mask.. i used the one made by 3M . ..

I use model master enamals for the most part for airbrushing... I use the Model Master / Testors thinner for the paints as i've gotten better results with them than with other thinners such as mineral spirits.. in order to save money I only use the thinner for my paints.. I keep low odor mineral spirits to clean my airbrush and paint bottles and what not..

I've tried Turpentine washs on model master enamals black on od green and without a dullcoat to seal the paint the turp wash tended to darken my basecoat...

Hi all,

Thanks for the help.

I read that I can use laquer thinner to thin MM paint, this is interesting as I still have laquer thinner available :-)

By the way, What does IMHO means ?

Hi there Pionner,

I use MM paint for almost all of my painting whether it be air brushing or regular brush painting. It just works the best for me. Also, I thin it with the MM thinner. It's expensive, but lasts a LONG time. I clean up with some cheap paint thinner from Home Depot or Lowes.

I've always heard IMHO means In My Humble Opinion.

I've used lacquer thinner in MM paints for airbrush before, and while I have had one bad experience, I can generally say that this works well.

I once got a pitted or gravelly texture, but I suspect I was laying the paint on too thick, too quickly. The key is a couple of 'dust' coats, and then lay on the color opaque.

Could be my imagination, but I have found lacquer thinner seems to aid MM gloss colors in laying down smoothly. I've achieved a perfect, automotive-finish-smooth-as-glass finish with MM gloss white and lacquer thinner on an HO RR car.

As always, just be cautious and experiment. Now's the time to pull out that junky old Glencoe BTR-50, or AMT/Ertl T-72, and try it there, first, before you paint your FAMO that way.
