Last night when I got home. I was still stewing about the gas prices here in Michigan. I was sitting around wondering how much I would save if my work were to change the work week from 5-8's to 4-10's. I started to make a chart based upon a $3.00 gallon gas price, using miles per gallom and miles driven round trip to work. After some calculations it came up to $15 a week. $60 a month and $720 a year. thats a 3.5% increase in my pay simply by switching the schedule around. I brought this up to management and they thought it was a good idea. Not only would it be saving in gas costs but for people with kids on the cost of daycare. There are off course many jobs out there that do not have the option of doing this. But what I was wondering was would this help out any of you? Or, would it have an adverse affect? It seems to me if you add up the numbers, it would be a huge boost in the economy if more companys changed there schedule to this. What do you guys think?

I belive it would help emotionally. In my prewvious job, I usually worked 4 9's and a 4. Getting out at noon or 11 on Friday made a very decent weekend. There is general maangement opposition (with no real explanation of why) to this. In an office like mine, some people would have to work My position requires certain things to be done. If I'm off a week, regualr meetings have to be adjusted accordingly (as did regularly required reports in my previosu job) Mondays and others Fridays. i believe it would decrease sick time usage, allowing people a full business daty each week to schedule appointments and do business (like hit the LHS!) It could also increase anxillary business. like golf courses, the hotel buisness, and others. A weekned getaway could be more leisurely and relaxing. Some businesses could save much more with reduced staffing/energy consumption for an extra day a week.

Jay,

My squadron runs that shift. Days M-Th 0600-1700,Nights M-Th 1600-0300 and Weekends F-M 0600-1700. Everybody seems to enjoy this schedule and the aircraft get fixed really quickly. Cheers!

I agree w/ AJ LaFleche - I would love 4x10's just for the sake of having a 3 day weekend. For those, such as myself, who don't really like thier job - it is such misery to come in Monday morning with the feeling that you just left... :-) Wishful thinking on my part as the business I am in never sleeps.

Don't know about the number crunching end, but you got my vote! I would LOVE to have a four day work week...that would leave 3 days for concentrating on the better things in life ( ie. Armorama, modeling, reading about modeling, writing about modeling, etc.)

With the upturn in manufacturing a lot of people are working 60 hours a week. The three guys I have working for me work 5 10s an 8 on Saturday. They are happy to have the overtime. I am on salary so it all pays me the same. However, I am not complaining because at least I have a decent paying job and good family to work for. (The foundry is family owned and has been in operation on the same site for 110 years.)

Back on topic:
I think this would be great for young families. One less day to have the kids in day care.

In some states it is considered overtime beyond an 8hr day regardless if you fit in a full 40. So you would be paying 32 reg hrs and 8 OT hours every week if you switched to a 4x10hr schedule.

Personally for me I'd like to see more telecomuting rather than having to drive 30 minutes to attend a 1 hour meeting before traveling again
