Hi guys just been to my local hobbycraft at Preston.I don't generally buy from them as they are two or three pounds more expensive than rrp,but I thought you might be interested to know that they have a few bargains. The tamiya T55,M26 Pershing,Universal carrier and Leopard 2A6 all currently have 30% of there prices.I got the Leopard, retail was about £38, with the discount I paid £26.57. I dont know if this applies to other hobbycraft stores but check them out for a bargain!

Retail about £38............... I'm lost for words. The Italeri Leo 2A5 was about £12 IIRC. Unless the Tamiya version has a full set of Aber PE and MK tracks included, I can not understand why people pay such ridicioulous prices..

my local hobbycraft stocks only a limited amount of airfix stuff with sadly no "serious" model brands on top
BUT they do have a great range of scenics and supplies so they'll be getting a visit regardless. Their dried flower selection looks ripe for groundwork.

Hi all
I use transport models occasionally but I prefer to buy on internet and at model shows.I don't generally buy new release kits but wait for them to come cheaper. I have purchased some second hand kits from transport. I like to add etch and resin and I find this is something I can get easier on the web.I also use halifax modellers world, this is an excellant shop albeit a bit further away but if your after a day out try it you wont be disapointed they have a selection of everything plastic, resin and etch.

I think these chain stores are basically aiming at the no brainers, people who don't really know much about the hobby but are quite prepared to pay a high price for a kit because they don't know any better.
Serious modellers like ourselves know to shop around and can find out where a good deal is to be had at short notice.
The most popular excuse that i heard was at Xmas time when some of the larger stores in the expensive end of london were selling the same toys as everyone else but the prices were higher. The reason for this was so called over heads as well as you are buying into the Xmas theme of the store and so you are expected to help the store pay for all the lights & decorations which help too display the product![]()
Naturally! They have to pay their staff their exorbitant wages somehow! Please remember that these stores are really just charity shops to keep their staff in a job. Honest Guv!

I agree that serious modellers probably know to shop around to get the best deal, but hobbycraft is bringing our fine hobby to the attention of another generation.Granted the high prices might put them off buying a kit there and then, but as we all know once the interest is there it is very hard to resist. This may lead to 'little johnny' moaning at mum and dad to buy him a magazine that he will see all those built up tanks.I personally remember going into Beatties(now sadly passed) at Blackpool when I was 10 and the sight of all the models was just awesome, thats what sparked my interest. Maybe hobbycraft will do the same for the youngsters. My local hobby shop in preston is away from the town centre and when you arrive there are no other shops to browse,so unless you know it was there you wouldn't go.Hobbycrafts tend to be at large retail parks where all the family can shop and bring our hobby to a wider audience.
I am only thirty years old but don't know anybody else who enjoys model building. My kids enjoy the playstation but I hope to bring them round to my way of thinking sooner rather than later.
What do you guys think ?

Simple do what I do get the wife to drop me off at Transport Models she goes to Morrsisons/werever I have about an 1 or so opening boxes and browsing ect a great way to waste a Saturday morning
As for it moving it was a small place before and they never had 1/4 of the stuff that they now have for sale.
I remeber mark the owner explaining to some one why they moved to were they did and not the town center or retail park
simple really ,rent costs ect also they would need security as alot of the stuff could be easily stolen from the shop and with the bagheads and chav's that Preston contains that could be a major problem! would you want your kit browsing to be disrupted by a load of kids just coming in to cause bother for the fun of it? security are always throwing groups of teenagers out the St Georges cebter every week. next time your in hobbycraft have a look always a memeber of staff stood at top of the stairs when you go there why to stop shop lifting ect
mark also said since they have moved out of the town center sales have gone up ! they now have more room to display the goods. also as a rule people will come to the shop to buy a specific item not just pop into keep the rain off their heads like what happens in a lot of town center shops
also you dont have to pay for parking either do you?
And last thing! not got the problem with the traffic getting out of Deepdale retail park ...nighmare I'll now be avoiding that place during the weekends until after christmas

I use to go to my local hobby craft about 2 or 3 times a month until they decided to close it, didn't buy many full kits, just paint, celluclay (only place I've ever seen it), wooden bases etc. The best thing though is when they closed it and most of the models went for 2 thirds of the price, got a few bargains then I can tell ya!. :-)

Hobbycraft at Wednesfield, West Mids just stuck in a nice new shelf, stacked top to bottom with a nice mix of Tamiya kits, from modern armour up through WW2 and then some nice bike kits.
