"Empire of the Sun"
Just a great flick. The outdoor cinematography rocked.
"P-51 Cadillac of the sky!!" Anyone who saw that kid jumping up and down on the roof when the 'stang pilot did the wing waggle and didn't well up had to try pretty hard not to.

Oh, and Christain Bale who played Jim in the movie,

Same with the beginning of A Bridge to Far, when the boy cycles down the path and the Recce Spitfire comes over at tree top height and waggles his wings after the boy waves at him..... Goosebumps as I type..

Yes, 'Empire of the sun' really caught the mood of the war in the east, and the experiences of western civilians caught up in the mayhem.
'Saving Private Ryan' and 'Band of Brothers' probably caught the most realistic impression of war in all its severity and tragic consequencies. The film with the biggest impact on the brutallity of war and genocide has to be 'Schindlers List'
These are perhaps the best films but paradoxicly not films I would watch very often due to their intensity.

the pianist is very, very good (which means it is depressing because it is set in the Warsaw Ghetto). Band of Brothers was a very good mini series. Das Boot is very good.
cheers

Just thought of another I enjoy watching:
Jame Witmore---- Battleground......
Bob Mitchum, and Kurt Jurgens........ The Enemy Below......
John Wayne----- On Wings of Eagles.
and how about---- On a Wing and a Prayer? Again the book was 100% better...LOL
I'm sure I'll come up with a few others...... but don't wish to overtax my senile brain....... :-) :-) :-)
I was wondering when somebody would mention Battleground. It's on my top ten list.
For the record here is my list.
Saving Private Ryan, with all it's flaws
The Great Escape
Patton, also flawed but very good.
Das Boot
The Longest Day
Battleground
The Cruel Sea
Twelve O'Clock High
Battle of Britain
I also like what somebody once called Guilty Pleasures.
Kelly's Heroes
Operation Petticoat. More based on fact than many people give it credit for. For instance the bit about sinking the truck kind of happened.
The Dirty Dozen
1941. also based very much on fact.
By the way, just out of curiosity, shouldn't both this post and the "worst movie" post be in the Movies forum, not off topic?

Hi there
3 films come to mind:
Theirs Is The Glory - actual Arhnem combatants went back to re-enact the battle.
Plus the previously mentioned Stalingrad and Das Boot.
All the best
Rowan
P.S. And despite all its problems - The Battle of Britain! I could just watch those aircraft all day!

Hi all!
Rowan, have you heard about the movie
Dark Blue World from Jan Sverak?
It's a movie about Cezch pilots enlisting in the RAF during the Battle of Britain. It's the usual "two guys fighting for a woman" story but the movie is quit good despite the fact that the Spitfires are not always the accurate versions...
My list would be:
Band of brothers
The Longest Day
Stalingrad
Baa Baa Black Sheep (the serie)
... and Dark Blue world!

Hi Jean-Luc
I watched Dark Blue World the other week and it included some aerial footage from "The Battle of Britain".
I was knocked out flying back from Greece a few weeks ago; the weather was clear and we were kept in a holding pattern over Biggin Hill and Kenley... looking out towards the coast, you could see the entire 11 Group "battlefied". It's a sight I'll never forget.
All the best

Hey Henk!
YES, YES, YES; I remember "Het meisje met het rode haar"
(What's the English translation?
The redhead? :-) )
That's a Dutch classic resistance movie. I hope for everybody that pearl is translated for international market and if not, you guys are missing something indeed!
There are some very good Dutch productions, although I saw the DVD of the series of "Oorlogswinter" (War Winter) but that was dissapointing a bit.
BTW did anybody mentioned
TOUR OF DUTY allready?
When I was 16 (long time a go) I could not miss a single episode. Purcell, the serg, LT, man it was great. Specially the first series where super.
Still here Rolling Stones "Paint it black" !

I think this was just in the Los Angeles area but one station there used to have the "Million Dollar Movie." They'd show the same move each week night at about 7:00. At the beginning of the show they'd have somebody introduce it, and at each station break they'd show these props from the movie. Like for Mr Roberts they'd show a palm tree, and naval commander's cap, a bottle of coke, etc. If you missed the movie one night, or really liked it, you could see it any of the other times.
Back for a moment to Battle of the Bulge. I did really like it when I saw it the first time in a theater in Hollywood, the Cinerama Dome. They had this big set made up in the lobby. I can't recall all what they had but it was like props from the movie. It made going to the movie more of an event.

Rodger, we also had Million Dollar Movie, channel 9 (WOR) out of NY, came on about the same time Monday to Friday, 4:30, and again at night, if I recall it was 8 or 9 PM, and ran all day Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
Hey thanks for the reminder.....
Mr. Roberts..... still one of my favorites........
When "A Bridge Too Far" opened by me, they had all these restored vehicles outside in the parking lot, the reinactors, and of course, the the Army recuiter, and National Guard recuiters.........
Great thinking..... let me go watch the Brits get slaughtered, and run out to enlist........

I always thought it was too bad that they never made Red Storm Rising, Flight of the Old Dog, and Team Yankee into a movie.
Those just beg for CGI.

I guess "band of Brothers" and "Saving private Ryan" would be typical of favorite area in WW2.
But extending the list would be "Blackhawk down", "Michael Collins" and "the wild geese".
Love these 5 films.

Steven we have the same reading lists. Could you imagine how long Red Storm Rising movie would have to be to match half the book?
Team Yankee another favorite!

It is an excellent peace of work!
