Hi Eric,

Thanks for the links

From the descriptions in the reviews the kit sounds very similar, if not on a par with the Academy kit. I started building th Academy kit a few years ago, got as far as finishing the construction. I'm just not game at the moment on doing the Natural Metal. The last kit I tried doing it on was a Smer 72nd Dewoitine 510... and that didn't come out very well :-)

Hi Tarok,

You mentioned no WWII equipment...

What about WWII equipments that's on display in Museums... Does that count?

Cos technically your depicting a piece of vintage equipment from another time in a modern day setting. If this is permittable, how about limiting it to equipment in Museums on the African continent that took part in a war on the African continent?

Hi All,

I would love to see both Anglo Boer War and Bush war models. I'm in the process of scratchbuilding a Casspir in 1/35 scale, Faan gave me some wheels that will work.

I'm not familiar with South African vehicles after World War 2.

However, I'm intersted in joining the campaign because it's a refreshing change.

Can you share some examples of vehicles, events, etc. so I can choose a subject for this campaign?

Thank you.

Cougar:

I must be perfectly honest with you and say that it seems to be an attempt to circumvent the “No WW2” rule , but rest assured that I have given your question a great deal of thought, most of the weekend in fact.

That said, I guess we would have to look at the focus of the diorama or vignette. Is the focus of the subject on the equipment (vehicle/aircraft/personnel equipment) or is it a depiction of a museum – for example the Regimental Rooms in the Cape of Good Hope Castle. A vehicle or aircraft on a piece of grass or tarmac would not constitute a valid entry, as the focus is clearly the piece of military machinery.

As you can see, this is somewhat of a grey area, I’m not even sure if any of the other campaign leaders have had to face this question – so well done on posting a real b@!l buster of a question! Unfortunately as this is a grey area I’m going to have to decline your request, however, it’s not an outright or emphatic “No”. You are welcome to email your idea to me and I’ll review it, however, please bear in mind that one of the main objectives of this campaign is to draw attention to African wars, life, etc other than the war in North Africa during WW2. It’s to drum up some interest in, amongst others, SA armour…

Once again, well done on a real vark of a question... and feel free to mail me your idea, or even any remarks of discontent wrt my answer...

Hi Tappie,

I'd love to see another Boer War dio from you... I have a look at the other one in your gallery - really nice!
A Bush War dio would be unique, and there are so many possibilities - not only SA, but also the Rhodesian...

There are are so many possibilities with this campaign... virtually every African country has gone through wars of independence and libertion, not to forget the original colonial wars they went through...

Can't wait to see that Casspir... if you want to enter it into this campaign, don't forget that it must be completed during the timespan of the campaign...

Hi Angela,

Thanks for the interest...

Don't forget, it's not only South Africa, but the whole of Africa... Similarly, not only vehicles, but all genres - except Sci-Fi and Fantasy... so even civvie stuff qualifies - see my taxi example above...

Thanks, that part of what we are going for here...

Unfortunately this is a pretty broad question, since we are dealing with an entire continent here... you could virtually go for any Russian AFV, as the Soviets flooded Africa with them... there are countless wars of liberation and insurgency and colonial etc...
Personally, I will be going for figures... I've been looking at some British troops that were based here from circa 1795 when Napoleon started his rise to power and the Price of Orange begged Britain for help... Else something from the Anglo-Zulu wars or the Anglo-Boer wars...

Hi again,

Thx Rudi for the compliment, I am working on some more ABW dio's.

I'll give the Casspir a extra push, lol, to see if I can finish it.

Steve I do believe that the wheels I got from Faan is 1/24 Unimog wheels. The Casspir used a 20" rim, so scaled down the Unimog wheel in 1/24 is as close a can be to a 20" rim in 1/35.

Thinking on African ideas...... Livingstone & Stanley, Alan Wilson and the Shangani Patrol, Roke's Drift in 1/35 scale, The 1868 Gold Rush, well teh ideas are endless, at least 400 years of history awaits the eager modeler out there.

Well kids, I've gone and done it... I've submitted the proposal on CCC... I know I said I'd wait until the end of June before making the submission, but I got wind of one or two others in the pipeline that could have effected the length and dates of our campaign...

I took the liberty of naming it SiyaAfrika... the isiZulu for "We are African"... well that's what I hope it translates to :-)

I only hope I articulated my point clearly in the submission...

As an added bonus... and one which I hope won't make you guys pull out of this one and only go for the suprise submission... I also proposed a Middle East & Mediterranean campaign... yup, 2 seperate campaigns... this second one runs for about 4 months, from about March 1 - July 25 2006... I decided to propose it now, before any other campaigns for this theatre are submitted... that way WE also get to build something SA troops took part in! Btw, I named it "Club Med: Sand, Sea, Sunshine... & Bullets"

So there should be time for folks to do both... I will be doing both if they are both approved... so hou duim vas ouens!

It'll probably be about 2 weeks before we hear anything, and I'm sure during that time the Campaign manager will be thrashing a few things out with me... I'll try keep you all informed...

Hi Rudi,

Hehe, I can see how it might appear to come across like that, but in earnest that's not my intentions. That being said, I've also been thinking about it and it'll probably amount to some cunfusion down the line and might be better to create another African Campaign at a later stage to handle Africa and WW2, or even a Campaign to showcase Aircraft and Armour in Museums around the world!

Personally, I was thinking about building something like an Airfix 72nd Puma. I've had one sitting here in it's box for a few years now

Hi Warren,

No worries, mate. I was only pulling your leg - I suspected it was something that you were wondering about and not necessarily posing the question for yourself. Excellent question though!

Lmao, I just thought it would be a nice workaround for Bren's Desert Hurricane idea. There's one in the Saxonwold Museum in Jhb if I'm not mistaken

If anyone's interested, Italeri have a 72nd kit of the aircraft (No. 1211)

found a good reference for s.a forcesanglo-boer war, 1914 rebellion, sw africa campaign, east africa and europe in wwi, and of course wwii. I commandeered the book a few years back from ouma, it is The Soldiers by Willem Steenkamp.

maybe a local library has it if anyone is interested?

At the risk of being SHOUTED at… :-) . How about running a practice group-build to start the ball rolling and gather interest in the campaign…

No medals or honours, just simple rules / guidelines and timeline for a build. KISSs – Keep it Simple Straightforward & small. By this I mean NO 1/25 scale Mk1a Olifant conversions, just for example a 1/72 scale Airfix Puma or some such....

Folks,

Just a quick update... after several emails back and forth with Jim Lewis (aka GunTruck) we realised the reason the Club Med doesn't appear on the CCC page, is due to a date issue...

Apparently no campaigns appearing in the 2006 calendar year appear there, and won't until either later in the year or 1 Jan 2006... so please all, keep this campaign in mind for 2006.

Thanks for the support!

Rudi

P.s. please enroll in SiyaAfrika here
