We had gotten rid of C-Rats by the time I was there, so I always had MRE's, but the oldtimers all complained about them until the Tabasco sauce showed up.

The C-Rats were far better than the MREs. In 83 we went on REFORGER and took our C-Rats with us. We were stupid enough to trade several cases of C-Rats for MREs...I don't think any amount of Tobasco sauce could have helped them. We would toss them to kids along the road and after awhile they would throw them back at the next jeep in the convoy. It would seem they didn't care for them either.

One of the sad things is that a lot of the "jodie calls" have gone the way of C-rats and P-38s in the era of political correctness.

They sure did used to take your mind off the discomfort on those long formation runs. An NCO who could really call off the cadences was a great asset to your unit.

"ain't no use in going home..... Jodie's got your girl and gone.

jodie, jodie had big feet.........reached from here to Market Street."

Tom, That calls to mind a running cadence regarding Jesse James and the things he wanted to ride.....I would suspect that would be yet another that could be added to the PC death toll.

My girl's a pretty girl, she is a city girl, I'll buy her anything to keep her in style. She's got a set of hips, look like two battleships... Anyone remember that one?

Ah the good ol' days.

I remember ...

My girl's a vegetable
She lives in a hospital
I would do anything to keep her alive

Last night a played a joke
Pulled the plug and watched her choke
I would do anything to keep her alive

I don't know if there are any more words. What do you expect from the infantry.

Although, that's pretty tame compared to the one I recall about "napalm sticks to kids"...that one was baaaad...

In fact, that one always bothered me.

My girl's got no hands and feet
She's just got four slabs of meat
I would do anything to keep her alive

My girl's got no arms and legs
She's just got four wooden pegs
I would do anything to keep her alive

Non-PC cadences are still in use, just depends on where you are and who's around.

I would suspect that is true. We were banned from singing the Jesse James cadence because our XO took great exception to it. So, it was sang only in those PT formations that she was absent.

Anyone remember the "Hypothetical M_______ing Son of a B____ Columbo?"

The Queen, she gave him three fine ships
They all were triple deckers
When they set sail she waved a scarf
The crew the waved their, well they waved back at any rate.

Ohmigod, it's been years since I heard the Columbo song! I half convinced myself that I'd never heard it right, that it was the clean "In Fourteen Hundred and Ninety-Two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue" song. Anybody know where a full set of lyrics might be?

A yellow bird
With a yellow bill
was perched upon
my window sill

I coaxed him in
With a crust of bread,
and then I squashed
his F head

Well, another verse goes:
The captain had a cabin boy,
the dirty little nipper
he packed his ass with shards of glass
and circumsized the skipper

he said it could be found, oh
he said the earth was round, oh
that hypothetical mast...
