Not long ago my brother came over from Canada for a visit. The last time he was over was a few years ago, before the "war on terrorism" and he was expecting massive security at the airport.

Well he said there was full security at Toronto airport when he departed, however his flight landed in Heathrow and he had to catch a connection to Manchester airport. After he disembarked at Manchester he was waiting for a taxi and stood next to him was a security officer.

My brother pointed out that not one person had asked to see his passport from boarding the plane in Canada to walking out of Manchester airport, and he had expected it to be much more strict since his last visit a few years ago. The security officer answered without a pause.......

"It's alright lad, no need to check, we remembered you from last time."

Family have often commented on customs in the UK: a person strolling in waving a British passport gets pushed through without being checked, while South African's get given the full interogation

What's with that???

Anyway... the out-laws are on their way to the UK tomorrow... hope they look forward to the cavity search!!!! :-) :-) :-) :-) :-) :-)

Rudi, as a South African living in the UK, I can say that the first time you enter the UK they stop just short of the cavity search. :-)
After the initial checks (expect ±10 to 15min per person) it gets easier the second and so times around.

The checks are justified, as quite a few foreign citizens enter the UK illegally. Once in the UK, the process to get them out takes literally years and has become a very sore point in the UK.

It's a good thing he didn't fly into our local airport, they might have checked his shoes.

well, during the day of 9/11 guess where all of the stranded plains in the air unable to enter the US went? Right here in newfoundlans air ports. (Newfoundland being a island)

now normaly we only get small pasanger aircraft, most often the biggest carrying 80 people.

Then one day we have 70+ plains landing of every size with over 13,000+ pasangers, mosty around the St. John's and Gander Airport (btw, gander has only 1 set of lights in all of town). Oddly enough we had a plan in place on how to deal with this type of seneriao............. and it worked flawlessly, untill we had to find somewhere to put these people for the next few days. So every hotel room was booked, then schools started to be set up to house people, as we where running out of schools peopled started offering their homes for the people to stay.

now how tight do you think security could be with such a huge rush (compaired to what we normaly get) of people in such a short time when they are scrambeling just to find places for the people to sleep.

Also one time we had 3 or 4 US steal aircraft land here after crossing the atlantic, now then security was tight.

Yes I know!
On the 9/11 my wife (she's a Flying Assistant) was flying to New York and the flight was diverted to Hallifax (which I already knew from my Portuguese Navy days) and stayed in Truro - all of this in Nova Scotia, if my memory serves me well!
It was a hell of a day! At least for me, without any real and reliable info - until 8PM!

And back to Airport Security - I have completely different experiences in the US airports and Immigration guys (from the Hard guy to the Normal Person) and even got a smile, once - only to discover that he stamped on a page already signed and stamped by him, a year before - coincidences!!!

On arrival home, my bags usually have a paper stating that my luggage was choosed to be inspected... could it be the model parts that make any confusion to the X-Ray machine guys?? Resin and PE

I understand why it is done - It's for my security!!!

when we came back from Cyprus last year we were running late so I ran ahead to tell our driver we were on our way. I ran straight through customs carrying two bags of hand luggage nothing not a word I could have been carrying anything ( actually I had an extra bottle of couvosier in one of me bags) still makes you wonder how safe we really are.
